Even as a facilitator I am diving into all the workshops and receiving the benefit of the restorative justice circles, learning from other's lived experiences and deepening my awareness of my own triggers and the oppressive systems we're all subject to, every day, and this is what you will also experience". Garrett Jacobs, Co-Director

We have some incredible community organizations for the project component who are on the leading edge of social justice and land ownership.

If you're at all interested in deepening your own practice in community design and equity work and leadership please do apply.

Leading at the Intersection: Our Identities in the Workplace

Our advisor and long time friend Audrey Galo is hosting a conversation at General Assemble on Dec. 5th to discuss identity in the workplace. We believe diversifying the profession means talking more about identity and how it impacts all our experiences.

Pathways to Equity

We are now recruiting for the Pathways to Equity Leadership Program! If you would like to develop leadership skills based on the values of equity and community practice please sign up now - www.pathwaystoequity.org.

From September to April we will convene an interdisciplinary cohort of Bay Area designers, developers, and community leaders for workshops, peer to peer learning, and community partnerships and projects.

This is a great opportunity for firms to show their commitment to social impact work, investing in their staff, and deepen connections to the local community.

We can schedule firm talks and brown bag lunches for those interested. If you need further support material, ask and we can provide.

We are incredibly lucky to have Liz here in Oakland! We highly encourage learning from what she has to share.

“We are building on top of brokenness, is it any wonder that the foundations cannot hold. Holding space for pain and grief was never in my job description as an architect… By holding space to first express pain and grief, we were then able to brainstorm ideas for a site, amazing ideas.” Liz Ogbu

Liz Ogbu, founder of Studio O, shares incredibly insightful experiences in her new TED Talk about discovering the importance of healing and her role as a healer with the tools of design. We recommend watching this one, and then watch it again to take notes.

Thank you for sharing, and for paving the path Liz!

United Nations Expert Describes Oakland and California's Homeless Crisis as 'Cruel' | East Bay Express

"Every person I spoke to today has told me, 'we are human beings,'" said Farha about her conversations with camp residents. "But if you need to assert to a UN representative that you are a human, well, something is seriously wrong."

But this repeated forced movement, coupled with the absence of a realistic pathway back to stable housing, is what Farha said is "systemically cruel" about the plight of the homeless in the state.

If you've found ways to support the local homeless community let us know here. Or if you want to help but don't know how, we'll help direct you to orgs to help.

General information

We believe access to quality design is a fundamental right. Open Architecture SF, as part of an international collaborative, empowers communities through participatory engagement resulting in healthy, safe and thriving built environments. By matching design professionals with nonprofits, neighborhood groups and local governments, we collectively work to achieve innovative and inclusive solutions to contemporary civic issues. Pathways for Equity is our program designed to build this equitable lens. Supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Curry Stone Foundation and the Association for Community Design the program launched in 2018. Pathways to Equity brings together an interdisciplinary cohort of fellows to develop self reflective practices, reset frameworks around privilege, power dynamics, and systemic racism in order to position professionals to approach work within a lense of equitable outcomes.
