OEA - OUSD Labor: Resources & Communications

February 20, 2019

Re: OEA Strike and Trauma PD

Dear Community School Partners,

OUSD received official notice from OEA of a strike day on Thursday, February 21, 2019. During the strike, OUSD schools will remain open, but it will not be "school as usual". For answers to Frequently Asked Questions and district updates, please feel free to monitor our Labor web page here, https://www.ousd.org/oea.

If your program supports school day programming, please contact your site principal(s) if you have not done so already. For After-School providers that are planning to support sites, please feel free to reference this set of guidelines for Thursday.

Additionally, there are still a few spaces available for the Trauma Informed Conditions for Learning Series for Community Partners. Please RSVP below if you are planning to attend. Moreover, we will be in communication if the OEA strike continues next week because Session One is planned for next Wednesday, February 27th.

In Partnership,

Community Schools & Student Services

California schools designated for comprehensive help under the Every Student Succeeds Act
For the first time since the 2015 federal education law was enacted, California identified 781 district and charter schools for 'comprehensive support and improvement'; 481 are schools receiving Title I federal aid selected for poor performance under the California School Dashboard (CSI Low Perform); 300 are high schools whose two-year graduation rate averaged less than 67 percent (CSI Grad).

How many public schools are in California?
The California public school system (prekindergarten through grade 12) operates within districts governed by locally elected school boards and superintendents. In 2013 California had 6,299,451 students enrolled in a total of 10,315 schools in 1,181 school districts.

Under a federal education law that requires states to identify the lowest performing schools, districts with these schools will get some federal aid and are required to figure out how to make the schools better.

Economically Distressed Communities need more help than others!

Ethan Berry, Inc. Nonprofit was founded by Ethan Berry in 2005 after working in the technology industry for over 10 years. Working my way through college at Marin Juvenile Hall (located in Marin County California) and Lions Gate Lock Down Facility for Youth (located in Martinez California) as well as working for West America Bank as an technician monitoring one of the very first ATM Systems and Electronics Technician on campus at Sonoma State University (both in California); I developed a keen understanding of what it took for me to be successful in life.

I often compared what I witnessed as a youth growing up in the two different worlds I lived in as 1) thriving in a academic environment vs. 2) growing up in a low income to middle class neighborhood. I often counseled youth at the juvenile hall and lock down facility I worked at on doing better in their life through getting a good education. It often came down to one thing, children model what they see around them the most! The environment they are exposed to at home, at school and in their neighborhood determines so much in their lives. Children who don’t have positive role models exposed to them often end up broken citizens. Not always, but often, children in economically distressed neighborhoods need to be exposed to the life skills and education tools which will help them be successful in their life, to become a full citizen juxtaposed to a broken citizen.

I realized my community had the Omegas Boys Club started by one man in the community (Filmore Graham), gyms opened up by one man in the community (Vigil Tilly), concerned parents and teachers. Something that most of the children in the juvenile hall and lock down facility I worked at did not have. I purposed it in my mind to somehow, some way, give back to the community of kids which were not exposed to the things I was exposed to in my community, at my k - 12 schools, in my home and within my neighborhood. When I was able to, I started Ethan Berry, Inc. Nonprofit to be a positive influence for children, especially in economically distressed neighborhoods, so they can get the life skills they need to be successful in their life through mentoring and tutoring programs in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

It’s been a labor of love every since! The nonprofit team has grown beyond me for our mentoring and tutoring programs since the beginning and we continue to help as many children and young adults as we can.
