International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law

International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law IANGEL connects volunteer lawyers, law firms, and bar associations to strengthen and support those who are working against gender bias and oppression in the US and around the world.
(4)

We are an international network of lawyers harnessing the power of volunteer lawyers to fight for equal rights and the human dignity of women and girls around the world. We believe in a world where all people have the same rights to basic human dignity, fairness, and self-determination, regardless of gender. We believe in equal economic opportunity, including the right to equal pay, fair pay, the right to education, and equal property and inheritance rights. We believe that women are entitled to personal dignity, privacy, and autonomy, including access to birth control and reproductive rights, the right to choose whom to marry and whether to divorce, and the right to live freely and without physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. We believe that the individuals and organizations working to protect women’s rights, to confront gender bias, and to reform legal and cultural barriers to full and equal participation of women in society should not want for resources. We believe that connecting volunteer lawyers to the cause of gender equity will build a stronger movement for justice worldwide. Our Team. IANGEL is lead by a diverse and dedicated team of women lawyers from around the world. Our Board of Directors is led by our founder and president, Nancy J. Newman. Our Approach. The movement for gender equity cannot afford to waste the talent, skills and energy of anyone who desires to work on this cause. Around the country and around the world, lawyers and law firms have the willingness and desire to donate their time and their skills as writers, thinkers, and advocates, to join the fight against unfair laws and discriminatory practices, but have few opportunities to do so. At the same time, those on the front lines of the struggle for justice are invariably stretched thin by the challenges of trying to do too much with too little. IANGEL changes this dynamic by:

Creating the Network
Creating and maintaining a network of lawyers, law firms, and bar associations, desiring to use their skills, resources, talent, and influence, to promote gender equity and fight oppression;

Developing the Connections
Developing and building connections with individuals, public interest law firms, and organizations around the world who promote or protect the legal rights of women and girls

Facilitating Deployment
Facilitating the effective deployment of pro bono legal services and international advocacy to the cause of equal rights. Together, we are a vibrant network of people and organizations around the world, using skills, hearts, and minds to bend the arc of history toward justice.

Long-term reproductive freedom will remain at risk for millions unless Congress passes the Global HER Act to prevent the policy from returning at the ideological whims of a U.S. president. The Helms Amendment was introduced in direct response to Roe v. Wade to oppress and control the bodies of Black and brown people using the power of the US funding. This harmful policy must fall in order for any vision of health equity and reproductive justice to be realized. It is time to fight white supremacy – Congress must repeal the Helms Amendment. https://repealhelms.org/

New Guttmacher research finds that if the Helms Amendment were to be repealed and health systems around the globe were supported by US policy, there would be at least 19 million fewer unsafe abortions and 17,000 fewer maternal deaths each year. #RepealHelms #HelmsHurts gu.tt/HelmsImpact

Today is International Women's Day! Time to step up, and challenge the social and societal norms that perpetuate and take advantage of women and girls' vulnerabilities in humanitarian settings. The Helms Amendment is harmful:

- It prohibits the use of US funds being used for “the performance of abortion as a method of family planning”
- It is a 47-year old US policy that effectively bans abortion-related services
- It can only be repealed by Congress
- It is the cause of millions of women dying from unsafe abortion because they cannot access sexual and reproductive health services, including abortion

IANGEL supports repealing the Helms Amendment.

IANGEL Advocacy Updates – February 2021 – International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law

IANGEL endorses the Support Funding for UNFPA Act, a bill that will authorize additional U.S. funding to UNFPA for programming addressing gender-based violence, such as providing health services in humanitarian crises. An increase in funding for UNFPA is a necessary step in ensuring that every woman and girl, especially those affected by COVID-19, has access to the basic human right to obtain sexual and reproductive health services. What’s age got to do with it? A look at the recent debate surrounding child marriage in India – International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law

Child marriages in India are fairly common, and the pandemic—which has caused significant economic hardship—has only worsened the situation. Read more about how child, early and forced marriage is a violation of young girls’ rights, and how we can advocate to stop this harmful practice in our latest blogpost.

For too long, the Global Gag Rule has put the health and lives of women, girls and vulnerable individuals in harm’s way for the sake of American politics. Without permanent repeal, through the Global HER Act nothing will stop a future president from instituting this policy again.

Biden drops Trump’s antiabortion ‘global gag rule.’ Here’s what that means for abortion access worldwide.

Rescinding the Global Gag Rule is just the tip of the iceberg. People—mainly Black and brown women living overseas—will still be denied access to abortion services because of the Helms Amendment. This dangerous and racist policy must go.

Decades of Washington-imposed whiplash have left sexual and reproductive health and rights programs around the world scrambling to secure funding — or adjust their practices.
