Inflamed: Deep Medicine and the Anatomy of Injustice

Our partners at Latinx Racial Equity Project recommend "Inflamed: Deep Medicine and the Anatomy of Injustice," a book by Rupa Marya and Raj Patel that explores the interconnectedness of our bodily systems, such as digestive, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, reproductive, immune, and nervous systems, and the systemic inequities ingrained in our political and economic frameworks. Unlike typical anatomy books, "Inflamed" sheds light on the complex connections between bodily functions and social justice issues.

How the Women of Standing Rock Inspired the World

We stand in solidarity with the women of Standing Rock, who continue to inspire and lead social justice movements worldwide. 💪 As this YES! Magazine article highlights, these women were at the forefront of the fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline, risking their lives to protect their land and water.
Their tireless activism and unwavering commitment to justice have not gone unnoticed. The women of Standing Rock have become symbols of hope and resilience, inspiring countless individuals to join the fight for a more just and equitable world.
Their stories remind us of the power of collective action and the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity. Let's continue to honor their legacy by supporting Indigenous-led movements and fighting for environmental justice for all.

Funder's Co-Director, Dana Kawaoka-Che,n shares her habit-shifting takeaways from the Transitions Labs. She emphasizes the need for new habits to support intersectional organizing and transform the systems perpetuating state violence without accountability.

Dana's insights are crucial for those of us in philanthropy who want to be part of the solution to creating a more just and equitable society. Changing funder habits is essential to the larger movement toward systemic change. We must shift our focus towards funding grassroots organizing efforts and centering the voices of those most impacted by injustice.

Pushing Back Against Habits of White Supremacy During a Crisis

CompassPoint Nonprofit Services' highlights how White Supremacy Culture can unconsciously impact individuals' behaviors, even if they have good intentions, and offers an explanation on how these patterns can emerge during crises, while providing strategies to resist them.

Addressing systemic inequalities within organizations and the wider community is crucial. The article outlines four ways to promote change: letting go of productivity, embracing mistakes, acknowledging fragility, and embracing complexity. Visit the link to learn more about these solutions.

As we all find ourselves being pushed, challenged, and transformed by this moment in time, it should be no surprise that dominant culture habits may be creeping back into our work, our teams, and our organizations.

Women's History Month grew out of a weeklong commemoration by Jimmy Carter in 1980

Happy Women's History Month! As we celebrate the contributions and achievements of women throughout history, let's also take a moment to acknowledge the origins of this important commemoration.

It all began in 1980 when President Jimmy Carter declared the first National Women's History Week, which eventually grew into the month-long observance we know today. This month, let's honor the trailblazing women who have paved the way for progress, and let's continue to strive for gender equality and empowerment for all women — including our trans sisters.

The first national Women's History Week occurred in 1980. Seven years later, Congress passed a law designating March as Women's History Month.

What To Do When The World Is Ending

Despair is our vanity talking.

"What to Do When the World is Ending" is a reflective article by Yotam Marom that urges readers to re-evaluate their priorities and take action in the face of a seemingly dire future.

Marom argues that instead of succumbing to despair, we should use this moment to confront the root causes of our crises and work towards a better world. Connecting with others and engaging in collective action can create meaningful change and build a more just and sustainable future.

So, let's take action and refuse to let the world end without a fight! 💪

Ohio Train Derailment Highlights Systemic Dangers

Recently, a devastating Ohio train derailment highlighted the systemic dangers we face when relying on fossil fuels and insufficient railroad regulations.
It's a sobering reminder of the risks we take every day and the need to prioritize safety and sustainability. We must work towards a future where these risks are minimized and our communities are protected. Check out the link below to learn more.

Reliance on fossil fuels and lax train safety requirements led to the derailment and subsequent release of dangerous vinyl chloride.

Happy Women's History Month! As we celebrate the achievements and progress of women throughout history, let us also take time to honor those who have fought for the rights and opportunities that so many of us enjoy today. We owe a debt of gratitude to the trailblazers who have paved the way and continue to be inspired by their courage and resilience. Let's use this month to uplift and celebrate all women, especially those often overlooked and marginalized. ✨ ⠀

Myrtle Witbooi, a South African activist and leader in the global domestic workers' movement, fought tirelessly for the rights and recognition of domestic workers. Witbooi advocated for better working conditions and protections for those often overlooked and undervalued. Her legacy serves as a reminder of the critical importance of supporting and uplifting the most marginalized communities.⠀

31 years ago today, the United States witnessed what many call the first viral video of police brutality. .⠀

Police do not make us safer; communities do. It's time to reimagine safety beyond the state, defund the police, and redistribute resources to where they are proven to prevent crime and improve safety. In a thought provoking opinion piece for the New York Times, Mariame Kaba argues that it's time to move beyond calls to reform the police and instead work towards the goal of abolition. Focusing on transformative justice and community based alternatives to policing, Kaba presents a compelling case for reimagining public safety and ending the cycle of violence perpetuated by law enforcement. Check out the article linked in our stories to learn why the call to "defund the police" is just the first step in this important work. We do not need police. We need each other. 💪⠀

"The Riot Within: My Journey From Rebellion to Redemption" is about his childhood and life in the days and years following the video recording of his beating by the Los Angeles police on March 3, 1991. In-Depth: the 10-year remembrance of Trayvon Martin, birth of Black Lives Matter

Join us in remembering Trayvon Martin and looking back at the birth of the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Trayvon Martin, a Black teenager, was murdered by George Zimmerman in 2012. The subsequent protests led to the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement. ABC Action News - WFTS - Tampa Bay highlights the impact of Martin's death on the country's racial justice movement and the ongoing struggle for equality and police accountability. The report discusses the progress made in police reform, while acknowledging the work that still needs to be done to address systemic racism and achieve true racial justice.

The death of Trayvon Martin is widely considered to be the beginning of the hashtag “Black Lives Matter” that would eventually turn into a movement. It was formed in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the man who killed Trayvon Martin 10 years ago.

How can we better prioritize our own healing and growth as we work towards a more just society?

Henrietta Lacks statue to replace Robert E Lee monument in Virginia

We are closing out with some great news!

In Virginia, the statue of Robert E. Lee, a Confederate general, has been replaced with a new statue of Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman whose cells were taken without her consent for medical research. Lacks' cells have been used in countless medical breakthroughs, but her family only learned of their use decades later.

Replacing Lee's statue with Lacks' is a significant shift in how Virginia recognizes and commemorates its history. Read more from The Guardian.

Can I tell you a bit about ASCRIBE Educational Consulting's non-profit, EDIFY Humanity's, youth program “Teach-In Time for Revolutionary Minds”?

The premise of this program was to build an inclusive space that would center the Black lived experience because too often that part of history is either left out completely or narrated with white-washed falsehoods.

This program is free to all participants and is funded by community donations.

This summer we are teaching our elementary age scholars will take part and develop an understanding of food sovereignty: home/community gardens as a mechanism to fight and end food deserts.

Our high school aged scholars will be learning about financial literacy, entrepreneurship through the lens of solving community problems based on community needs, and exposure to the Stock Market to invest in and build generational wealth.

At the end of the 8-week program, each scholar will be gifted with $100 to begin their journey and appreciation for financial stability. Our “Dollars for Scholars” Campaign has raised a little less than half of the $10,000 goal and that doesn’t include the purchase and distribution of our text for this session – “Marley Dias Gets it Done: And So Can You.” Donors can make a cash donation to the $100 investment gift or towards the purchase of 150 books needed to complete this program.

This is where we need your help. I am plugging in our active GoFund Me campaigns and our website where you can donate, share, or simply learn more about.
