Anyka Barber opened up the Betti Ono Gallery for drop-ins, so that members of the African-American community, and anyone else feeling the emotional weight of the aftermath of the George Zimmerman trial, could have a safe place to vent, console, empathize, or express their thoughts. At the same time, Jeff Perlstein opened up his spot, Solespace, for an “Art 4 Justice” workshop. At both locations, the windows became message boards for folks to share their feelings about what was going on.

Richmond Main Street is pleased to announce as of May 6, 2013, its partnership with Safety 1st a community development company specializing in services to Business Improvement Districts in the areas of public safety and maintenance of the public right-of-way. As a result of this partnership, Safety First has hired a team of Community Liaisons from the local community that will assist in community engagement and facilitation while providing maintenance and security services to Richmond Main Street and its stakeholders. The Safety1st team members are: as follows: Nancy Hall, Dante Lemons, Jazmine Wilder, Deonte Anderson, Mary Green and Annatreece Carter.
At Safety 1st our mission is to build healthy communities through public safety, community engagement and outreach, while serving as a trusted and effective community liaison for institutional services and support. We work to restore community confidence by fostering collective activism which leads to reduced incidents, better social outcomes and the realization of community efficacy. Our goal is to help transform the district into a lively, walk-able, welcoming experience for the community and its visitors by deterring crime as we improve viable services.
The Safety1st team will be providing services Monday through Friday to the MacDonald Avenue Business Improvement District.
The maintenance team will be staffed from 8:00 am – 11:00 AM, and the security team will provide coverage from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm. The teams will work in pairs, covering the MacDonald Avenue corridor from 6th to 16th streets, including Harbor Way, Barrett and Bissell.
We look forward to a strong partnership with the community and appreciate any and all feedback that helps us improve our delivery of service to the community.
