We are incredibly honored and grateful to announce that the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground project has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District Recreation Area Development Program!

The mission of the Lower Elkhorn NRD Recreation Area Development Program is rooted in protecting the future through the development and management of recreation and park facilities, conservation efforts, and projects that improve quality of life across Northeast Nebraska. Their Recreation Area Development Program was specifically created to help communities establish, develop, and improve public recreation spaces that are accessible and beneficial for everyone.

This mission aligns perfectly with the vision of the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground. Our goal is to create a space where children of all abilities can play side-by-side, build friendships, explore, imagine, and create lifelong memories together. Recreation should be accessible to every child and every family in our community, and this incredible grant helps ensure we will be able to provide that accessibility locally.

The Lower Elkhorn NRD has long recognized the importance of recreation areas that serve communities, strengthen quality of life, and provide opportunities for connection and outdoor engagement. Their commitment to supporting public recreation projects throughout Northeast Nebraska demonstrates the value they place on creating spaces that are welcoming and inclusive for all.

A heartfelt thank you to Lisa Parcel, Denise Enstrom, Holly Hurrell, Sheri Slatt, Cindy Blanc, Sue Beckner, Amy Guill, and Sandy Frahm for their generous donation to the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground in memory of their dear friend, Jeri Baker.

While not all were friends from childhood, they found something just as special—their “girl gang.” Brought together in different seasons of life, their bond only grew stronger as the years went on, stitched together by countless memories, shared laughter, and the simple joy of being together.

Many would say Jeri was the very glue of that girl gang—and likely many others beyond it. She had a way of bringing people together, making sure there was always something to celebrate, and ensuring no one ever missed out on even a moment of fun. If there was laughter to be had, Jeri made sure everyone was part of it.

How fitting that this memorial in her name will help create a space where connection, laughter, and joy can continue—where all children, all “girl gangs,” can gather to giggle, play, and feel that same sense of belonging Jeri created so effortlessly.

We can almost hear her now: “One more and we’ll leave together.” And maybe on this playground, it will sound like—one more climb, one more slide, one more thrill… and we’ll all leave together. And maybe, just maybe, the next generations of girls will be singing along to Sweet Caroline, echoing those same words as laughter fills the air in this new space.

We are incredibly grateful to Rose Jaspersen for her generous donation to the Oakland-Craig Inclusive Playground project as a memorial to Jerry, her spouse, who was a 1966 graduate of Oakland High School.

Rose’s impact reaches far beyond this gift. A proud Burt County native, she has dedicated years to strengthening rural communities through business and economic development. Through her leadership with the Nebraska Enterprise Fund and earlier work with the Center for Rural Affairs, Rose helped expand access to capital, training, and opportunity for small businesses across Nebraska—supporting entrepreneurs, family farms, and local economies along the way.

Rose continued to give back—mentoring college students and sharing her knowledge to help the next generation succeed. She served as “a link” for students to resources and opportunities, always focused on helping others grow.

That same commitment to opportunity and inclusion is exactly what this playground is all about. An inclusive playground ensures that children of all abilities have a place to play, connect, and belong—removing barriers and building a stronger, more welcoming community for families in Burt County.

Rose’s life work has been about opening doors. Thanks to her generosity, we’re opening even more—right here at home—for every child who will laugh, play, and grow together in this space.
