A special day for a sheep outfit… shearing spring fleeces, talking story around the skirting table, sharing knowledge and experience from those who have it with those thirsty to learn by doing, and getting through a long day together laughing about how it always seems to rain whenever we shear or plan to shear.

No need to pray for rain… just schedule a shearing day. We’ll get plenty of it, and we won’t complain… much!

Thank you to all the helping hands!

Thank you to , the shepherd shearer; , the shep ranch wrangler; , the sharpest fiber arts multi-tool of a woman who can do pretty much anything and everything fiber-related while staying cool and casual; and all the other sweet folks from the community who came out (, Rachel, Paul, India) including alum shepherd .

The ladies now have their sweaters off for summer

A border collie named Becky was what pulled to start working sheep and goats over 16 years ago.

The connection between canine and human in this work is a magic weave of instinct, evolution, care, trust, and bond that is what makes working with sheep and goats as we do possible. The care and camaraderie with our dogs is the glue that keeps us true to our calling, responsibility to our stock, and commitment to the bigger picture of what it means to be a shepherd.

Animals make us better people. They can be our greatest teachers and allies in this life and certainly in this work and lifeway.

A few recent scenes at the ranch. and holding it down managing the herd, celebrating the wildflowers and popping native grasses, observing reduced star thistle and mustard encroachment in the pastures, living the working dog life, and soaking up springtime. It’s a glorious time of year on the land with animals!

Caring, careful, and diligent routine seasonal animal husbandry activities are a vital part of our work, and should be for any and all livestock and grazing operations.

The Shep team with some guest appearance support by .anastasio & had a long day tending to hooves and giving extra B Vits and Selenium to our soon to be Navajo Churro ewes.

Much of California’s grazing forage lacks the selenium content ideal for gestating mama ruminants so we’ve taken up this practice to supplement with a quick shot of Bo-Se (the selenium supplement) and a vitamin B-Complex.

We used our Rollomatic tilt table, a wild contraption that allows us to safely and “efficiently” 🙃 to trim hooves that were very much needing some TLC after a wet winter near the coast!

Boss lady had to see what the tilt experience was all about too. Important to know the work and experience of your teammates. 😜

We are all getting geared up for a productive season ahead.

Thanks , , .anastasio, and . The animals thank you.

Now let’s see some lambs!

A lovely spring day at the ranch looking at goat butts and taking soil samples to see how our soil organic matter looks before we apply compost to the pastures that have been grazed. Hoping for that wee bit of rain in the forecast. Fingers crossed!

The herd is looking good after a winter on the coast! This is certainly a good time of year for a homecoming with so much green forage and days getting longer. Grazing season is kicking in and before long the Navajo Churro ewes will be having their lambs!
