Read the press release below about my friend, Joey, and his time serving at the Capitol as my page last week. I enjoyed getting to know Joey during our few days together and I have no doubt he has a very successful future ahead of him!
OKLAHOMA CITY – Joseph "Joey" Hirt, a junior at Community Christian School in Moore, served as a page during the tenth week of the Second Session of the 60th Oklahoma Legislature in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. He was sponsored by Rep. Jason Blair, R-Moore.
"Joey is an outstanding young man who represents Moore well," Blair said. "His commitment to academics and leadership speaks volumes about his character. It was a pleasure to have him at the Capitol this week and see his interest in public service firsthand."
Hirt, the son of Bart and Sarah Hirt, maintains a 4.13 GPA and is ranked No. 1 in his class, placing him on track to be valedictorian. He is a member of the Principal’s Honor Roll and the National Honor Society.
Outside the classroom, Hirt is active in a wide range of activities. He was a state runner-up in cross country and participates in wrestling and track and field. He also serves as drum major and is involved in his youth group.
"Serving as a page gave Joey a unique opportunity to see state government up close," Blair said. "Students like him are the future of our state, and I am confident that with his skills and knowledge, he will go on to do great things."
Hirt said he applied to the program to better understand how government functions and to continue developing leadership skills.
"I wanted to learn more about how the House of Representatives works and how laws are made," Hirt said. "I think it is important for students to understand government so they can be informed and engaged citizens."
After graduation, Hirt plans to attend either the United States Naval Academy or Oklahoma State University, where he intends to study political science or aviation. He hopes to become a military pilot or serve as a Judge Advocate General attorney.
He said the experience will be useful as he continues his education and considers a future career in law or public service.
"My future career plan is to become a lawyer," Hirt said. "To witness the process of passing laws that I will one day be tasked to work with, this experience will help me to better serve the people who will instill their trust in me. With a better understanding of why a law was passed, I can more tactfully fight for justice for a victim."
The Oklahoma House of Representatives High School Page Program allows students to assist legislators and staff, observe committee meetings and participate in a mock legislative session during their week of service.
