Step Back in Time: Olathe's Centennial Fashion Show 👗

One of the highlights of Olathe's Centennial celebration was a community fashion show that showcased over 100 years of style. Local residents modeled everything from authentic Victorian-era dresses of the 1880s and 1890s to elegant 1920s fashions, 1950s prom attire, swinging 1960s mini dresses, and even 1980s prom gowns.

Many of the garments weren't costumes—they were treasured family heirlooms passed down through generations, offering a rare glimpse into the clothing that Olathe families once wore. Patty Bosley's authentic 1890s ensemble even earned Best of Show honors.

Events like this remind us that history isn't just found in books it's preserved in family closets, photo albums, and the stories shared from one generation to the next.

🌟 Local Business Spotlight Tuesday 🌟

This week's Local Business Spotlight shines on Olathe Federal Credit Union, located at 314 Main Street in the heart of Olathe. They proudly serve the community Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Olathe Federal Credit Union was established in 1958 by a group of dedicated residents who believed in creating a member-owned financial institution that would serve the community for generations to come. The founding members were Bob Adams, O.D. Thomas, Louis D. Phillips, Allen Grant, Ward Lovelace, John W. Pierson, Marshall K. Schirer, and C.J. Pierson.
Today, Olathe Federal Credit Union continues that tradition of community-focused service. Member savings are federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), a U.S. government agency that protects members' deposits.

The credit union currently serves approximately 500 members and is guided by five volunteer Board Members and a three-member Supervisory Committee, whose commitment helps ensure the credit union remains a trusted financial resource for the Olathe community.

Since 1958, Olathe Federal Credit Union has remained a testament to what can be accomplished when neighbors come together to invest in one another and in the future of their hometown

Step Back to July 1920 at the Olathe Opera House!

More than 100 years ago, the Olathe Opera House was the place to be for an evening of entertainment. Throughout July 1920, residents could catch silent films, serial adventures, comedies, news reels, and westerns—all for just 15 to 40 cents! These weekly advertisements appeared in The Olathe Criterion, giving the community a glimpse of what was playing on the big screen.

Some of the featured attractions included:
• The Westerners (benefiting Company M, C.N.G.)
• A Damsel in Distress
• The Inferior S*x
• A Temperamental Wife
• Episodes of the action serial Daredevil Jack, starring boxing legend Jack Dempsey
• Riders of the Dawn
• The Desert of Wheat
• A Daughter of Two Worlds

It's fun to imagine the excitement of a Saturday night at the Olathe Opera House in July 1920—neighbors filling the seats, the lights dimming, and a silent film bringing the community together for an evening of entertainment.

As we celebrate 250 years of our nation, we’re also taking a moment to look back at pieces of Olathe’s history. These old pages from The Olathe Messenger remind us of a simpler time when community newspapers were filled with poems, puzzles and cartoon artwork that brought neighbors together.

While times have changed, the values of community, tradition, and celebrating our nation’s independence continue to unite us.

Today, we pause to honor the three firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting others. We remember their courage, their selflessness, and the lives they gave in service to their communities.

We also lift up the firefighters who are still on the front lines across Colorado and throughout our nation. May they find strength, protection, and safe passage as they continue the difficult work of keeping our communities safe.

To the fallen, we remember you. To those still fighting, we stand with you. ❤️

Did You Know? Olathe Once Had a Whole Newspaper Love Letter Written About It!

At some point in Olathe's history a resident penned a heartfelt letter to the editor simply titled "I Love My Town." More than a newspaper letter, it's a snapshot of how many people have felt about Olathe over the years a small town with big heart, beautiful surroundings, and neighbors who show up for one another. History may fill our archives, but some things never change... people still love calling Olathe home.

📜 Olathe History Minute

Did you know Olathe was setting water rates more than 110 years ago?

On October 27, 1913, the Town of Olathe adopted a resolution establishing water rates for labor camps. Camps housing 10 men or fewer were charged $4.50 per month, while larger camps paid higher rates based on the number of workers. Even livestock water use was factored into the rates.

This small piece of paper offers a glimpse into a very different Olathe—one shaped by agriculture, seasonal labor camps, and the challenges of providing water in the early 1900s.

While water rates have certainly changed since 1913, one thing remains the same: water has always been one of our community's most valuable resources.
