The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates that about 2,300 cougars live in the state. Cougars are an invaluable part of the ecosystem, who help increase biodiversity and maintain the health of other species. They live in low densities and regulate their own population size in balance with the ecosystem. There is no reason to hunt cougars except for the thrill of the kill and the prize of a “trophy.” Some states, like California, have banned the brutal practice. Meanwhile, WDFW is ramping up its assault on the state’s cougar population.
Washington sells 53,000 licenses to kill cougars every year, and allows them to be hunted 242 days of the year. Last year, the WA Fish and Wildlife Commission voted to increase cougar hunting in most areas of the state. At the same time, in many regions of the state, WDFW and local sheriffs aggressively pursue and kill any cougars that citizens report to them, including by using “posses” of armed hound hunters—even though Washington voters banned that practice in 1995. Combined, these actions resulted in 335 cougars reported killed in the state during the 2020 season, a 25% increase over the previous five-year average, and a 40% increase over the ten-year average.
Wildlife biologists know cougar hunting is unnecessary and does not increase public safety. To the contrary, cougar hunting actually increases human-cougar conflicts, as it destabilizes cougar populations and their social structure. Scientists warned the Commission of the negative consequences of increasing cougar hunting. But the Commission was taken in by the “laundered” science presented by WDFW’s management team, which, in turn, was pandering to powerful anti-carnivore interest groups.
