In utero Dalton was diagnosed with PUV (posterior urethral valves). PUV forms irregular valves where the ureters connect to the bladder causing the urine to reflux back into the kidneys. Doctors gave Dalton a 0% chance at life. When he was born he only had 15% kidney function between both kidneys. We stayed by his side praying for a miracle. After 3 weeks of waiting for Dalton to pass the doctors
finally started dialysis. He spent the first 2 months of his life in the NICU and underwent several surgeries. Dalton received a cadaver kidney 2 weeks before his 3rd birthday. Unfortunately, he contracted BK virus that destroyed his transplanted kidney. Dalton spent several weeks in the hospital after the kidney stopped functioning and soon he was back on dialysis. Dalton has spent his entire life fighting. He's had more surgeries than I can even count. Recently, we’ve been informed that Dalton's other organs aren't doing so well. Dialysis is an amazing life saving tool; however, it's not meant to be a life long treatment. Dalton has been on dialysis nearly 7 years, and now his heart and lungs are covered in calcifications and have become irregular. Due to Dalton's previous transplant and several blood transfusions he is highly sensitized. He has a PRA count of 98%, which means he is reactive to 98% of the population. This leaves only 2% that would be compatible. Doctors believe Dalton would wait at least 10 years on the list and his little heart and lungs just aren't doing well enough to wait the long. Sadly, everyone including myself that has already been tested was not compatible. Dalton’s blood type is O+ but due to his sensitivities doctors are willing to test any blood type as long as the tissue type is compatible. As Daltons mother I refuse to give up hope! I’ll continue to share Dalton’s story and pray for a miracle. I'm reaching out to anyone who would be willing to help save our precious angel. Please consider being Dalton’s hero!
