Gov stands by decision not to extend extra food stamp benefits

I think it’s heartless our governor is not taking advantage of a federal program to help 100,000 hungry Nebraskans.

We are the ONLY state in the entire country not participating in this program.

I was interviewed for KETV NewsWatch 7 today. Watch below:

'We're getting back to a more normal life'

09/09/2020

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts is PREVENTING our state from getting extra federal dollars for those on food stamps. Want to know how many other Governors are doing what he’s doing? NONE. Nebraska is the ONLY state in the country that hasn't applied for these extra funds.

This is cruel. People are hurting right now. We are in the middle of an unprecedented worldwide PANDEMIC. Hunger rates for families with children have TRIPLED! The majority of people who receive these funds are the elderly, the disabled & children.

The money for these extra SNAP benefits comes from a federal coronavirus relief bill. The federal government pays the FULL cost of the extra food! Why then would we PREVENT people with the LEAST among us from accessing these much-needed funds?

Governor, where is your humanity?

I think this is outrageous. If you do too, you can call our Governor at 402-471-2244.

Republicans all over the country are debasing themselves with absurd Trump-level fear-mongering. We saw this same “law and order” approach with Nixon. It was pathetic then, and it’s pathetic now.

This week, a bill to ban abortion passed in the Nebraska Legislature. I voted AGAINST this bill. It was patently unconstitutional and inserts the state between a woman and her doctor.

We’ve grown accustomed to “Republicans” being loudly anti-choice, but this WASN'T always the case.

Just 3 years after Roe v. Wade, public opinion polls showed Republicans SUPPORTED abortion rights even MORE than Democrats!

Republican First Lady Betty Ford called Roe v. Wade a “great, great decision,” and Republican Vice President Nelson Rockefeller CAMPAIGNED for abortion rights in NY.

But in the mid-70s a realignment started to occur. Republican strategists realized they could peel off Dem. voting Catholics and evangelical protestants so they leaned HARD into this issue. Groups like the Moral Majority formed and abortion became an easy way to motivate the base.

No thanks. This is not the Republican Party that I belong to. I am under NO obligation to conform to your revisionist version of the party (who by the way, continually skirts science, the rule of law, and the constitution).

You can have Trump. I'll take Lincoln.

We need to fund women’s health. Let's work to make abortion rare, legal, and safe.

One year ago today...... 👇

The Republican Party is enabling white supremacy in our country. As a lifelong Republican, it pains me to say this, but it’s the truth.

I of course am not suggesting that all Republicans are white supremacists nor am I saying that the average Republican is even racist.

What I am saying though is that the Republican Party is COMPLICIT to obvious racist and immoral activity inside our party.

We have a Republican president who continually stokes racist fears in his base. He calls certain countries “sh*tholes,” tells women of color to “go back” to where they came from and lies more than he tells the truth.

We have Republican senators and representatives who look the other way and say nothing for fear that it will negatively affect their elections.

No more.

When the history books are written, I refuse to be someone who said nothing.

The time is now for us Republicans to be honest with what is happening inside our party. We are better than this and I implore my Republican colleagues to stand up and do the right thing.

We all like to cite Abraham Lincoln’s Republican lineage when it is politically expedient but NOW is the time to ACT like Lincoln and take a stand.

Nebraska legislators, scientists make 11th hour bid for climate change study

Climate Change is the most pressing issue of our time. Covid-19 is devastating but we will one day have a vaccine. We don't have a vaccine for climate change. We must act.

There's a bill in the Legislature that I need EVERYONE to support. We need to PASS LB 283.

LB 283 would fund a study to create a Climate Change action plan.

Many Nebraska schoolchildren are writing letters to their state senators to get them to SUPPORT this important legislation. Please join if you can.

Read this good article on LB 283:

Legislative efforts to develop a climate action plan for Nebraska have stalled for years, but a group of state senators and scientists hope this is the year it gets a

Donald Trump used his unfettered presidential authority to undermine the UNANIMOUS finding by a jury that Roger Stone broke the law multiple times by lying to Congress and obstructing justice. ‬

‪Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman who served his country honorably and testified truthfully under oath to Congress, was the target of a massive smear campaign and retribution by the President.

As the father of three magnificent adults and two incredible grandsons, I despair at the legacy my generation is leaving our country on this Father’s Day.

From existential climate change that becomes more serious with each passing day to Congressional inaction on Social Security, to unsustainable budget deficits to a toxic political atmosphere that makes progress impossible, we need a change.

For democracy to survive in this troubled time, our political leaders need to make a concerted effort to move our country forward, party labels be damned. Think about your legacy. Think about your grandkids.

Immigration Reform — John McCollister

Today is a great day.

The Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration acted ILLEGALLY in rescinding DACA and the program will remain in effect. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program allowed young people who came here as children to work LEGALLY in the United States.

I have been a champion for immigrant rights during my entire tenure in the Nebraska Legislature and always will be. In 2015, I named as my priority bill a measure to grant driver’s licenses to Dreamers (here's an op-ed I wrote back then on this bill: https://www.omaha.com/opinion/midlands-voices-passing-driver-s-license-bill-makes-sense-for/article_5146dd8f-383d-5a99-a725-95ed9c45a131.html)

Immigration is GOOD for our economy and is a cause ALL Republicans should champion. Immigration is associated with overall increases in GDP and higher standards of living.

Let us all reject the regressive jingoism of Donald Trump and fight for true American values.

Immigration is good for the economy and good for our country.  Anti-immigrant sentiment is toxic and fundamentally un-American.

The Nebraska Republican Party recently sent out this mailer to attack their non-preferred Republican candidate.

This is a reprehensible ad and the state party needs to stop resorting to tactics like this. It lowers the discourse.

It's more than fair to draw distinctions between candidates, but misrepresenting someone's views and using fear-mongering dog whistles is beneath all of us.

Nebraska Republicans deserve better. Cut it out.

There is a certain subset of people in this country who believe a grocery store REQUIRING people to wear masks is an imposition on their "freedom.”

Did these people complain 6 months ago when these SAME stores told customers "No Shirts, No Shoes, No Service?"

Can you just walk in NAKED to a Walmart or do we have certain RULES in the interest of public health and safety?

Does it violate people's "freedom" when we require restaurant employees to WASH THEIR HANDS when they exit the bathroom? Do health inspections violate the rights of restaurant owners?

No. This is about public health. Let's cut out the teenage temper tantrums.

05/23/2020

Donald Trump apparently does NOT want people to vote-by-mail. On Wednesday, he threatened to withhold aid for Michigan and Nevada if the states allowed residents to vote-by-mail.

Many Republicans like to say absentee voting is "ripe for fraud" but the NUMBERS don't substantiate this claim. According to NE former Republican Secretary of State John Gale, there were only 2 cases of Class IV felony charges out of 860,000 votes cast in 2016. That’s a % of 0.00023.

If you believe in DEMOCRACY, you should support voting-by-mail. In our recent Nebraska primary election, thanks to a MASSIVE vote-by-mail effort, the total number of Nebraska voters surged to an all-time high of 471,434.

(By comparison, in 2016, only 313,000 ballots were cast).

This is the MOST people we've had voting in 48 years! (The previous high was 413,015 in 1972).

As Americans, the fact that more people are voting should EXCITE us but Donald Trump and some politicians don’t like it when more people vote. Why? Because it hurts their chances.

We've seen voter suppression efforts before in America. In the Jim Crow South, arcane poll taxes and literacy tests were enacted to DISENFRANCHISE voters. Still today, politicians GERRYMANDER districts to improve their chances.

This stinks. Elections should be won on ideas, NOT by subverting the election process.

I wholeheartedly support Voting-by-Mail. Let's get MORE people involved in the political process not fewer.

This is what Democracy looks like.

A crisis is the ULTIMATE test of a leader. Sadly, this pandemic has shown our president to be lacking in many ways. His famous lack of truthfulness, compassion, civility and advocacy of dangerous (perhaps fatal) remedies has been the HALLMARK of his ineptitude during this crisis.

As we approach the next election, let’s elect someone with proven leadership qualities. Let’s elect someone who can build COALITIONS and work with allies. Let’s elect someone who is willing to listen to EXPERTS instead of someone who’s ego steers the ship.

American history is replete with examples of leaders coming to the fore to save our republic during perilous times. Washington, Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, and Eisenhower come immediately to mind. We need to elect someone who can meet this challenge in front of us.

In a two-party system, we will not get everything we want in a candidate, but we should always opt for the person that has MORE of these qualities.
