Today, members of the Oneonta Professional Firefighters Local 2408 provided standby crews for the graduation ceremonies at SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College to help ensure a safe event for students, families, and visitors.

Crews also took advantage of the nice weather to get some pump training in and continue sharpening critical operational skills.

Today, members of the Oneonta Professional Firefighters Local 2408 conducted swift water rescue training.

Members practiced using highlines to move rescuers across the river, along with go-rescue techniques where firefighters enter the water to reach and remove simulated victims.

The Oneonta Fire Department maintains specialized equipment for these types of incidents, but equipment alone is not enough. Swift water rescue requires consistent, hands-on training so members are prepared to operate safely and effectively when seconds matter.

This evening, the members of the Oneonta Professional Firefighters Local 2408 responded to a vehicle into a building while crews were already handling another ambulance call.

During the incident, a chest pain call — typically requiring Advanced Life Support — was handled by Otsego County EMS with a Basic Life Support crew while off-duty firefighters were called back from home to cover the city.

Moments after callback crews arrived, another emergency was dispatched. Off-duty firefighter-paramedics immediately responded to a severe respiratory emergency where delayed advanced life support care could have had a far worse outcome.

This is the second time TODAY callback crews have responded from home to handle emergencies in Oneonta.

12 emergencies so far today.
2 handled by callback crews
9 by on duty crews and
1 by a mutual aid department.

These are the realities of today’s call volume. Staffing must meet national standards and be capable of handling multiple emergencies at the same time.

Yesterday evening, members of the Oneonta Professional Firefighters Local 2408 responded to a fire alarm at a Center City business.

Seven on-duty firefighters arrived to an active structure fire, splitting between fire attack and primary search as conditions intensified. Off-duty members were called back, and mutual aid helped cover the city.

The fire was contained to the room of origin due to a quick, coordinated response.

As budget discussions approach, the takeaway is simple: adequate staffing that meets national standards would ensure incidents like this are handled without leaving the community exposed.

12 emergencies and counting.

The Oneonta Professional Firefighters Local 2408 have been busy today, responding to numerous ambulance calls, fire alarms, traffic accidents, and fires.

Operating at the minimum staffing level of six firefighters on duty, today’s call volume has quickly stretched available resources.

Off-duty crews have already been called back four separate times to staff the station and handle additional emergencies. Without them, some of these calls would have relied on mutual aid or waited for on-duty crews to clear.

Calls don’t slow down—staffing has to keep up.

Tonight, the Common Council, with the support of Mayor Daniel Butterman approved moving forward with the pursuit of a fire truck to replace one of the aging units in our fleet once a suitable apparatus is identified. They also approved new reporting software and funding for emergency management.

We want to thank them for their support. This is a forward-thinking, proactive investment in public safety that will directly benefit the residents of our city.

The members of the Oneonta Professional Firefighters remain committed to providing the highest level of service to the residents and visitors we are sworn to protect. Investments like this are essential to keeping pace with the increasing demands placed on today’s fire service and ensuring reliable response when it matters most.

We look forward to continuing this progress and building a system that meets both today’s needs and the challenges ahead.
