🚣 COLD WATER SAFETY WEEK :: April 5-11 🚣

The weather is warming up and more people are heading out on the water. But don't let a 65-degree day fool you! Local water temperatures are still in the low 40s, and won't reach 60 degrees until late May.

Cold water kills fast. Here's why:

🌊 COLD SHOCK: When you hit cold water, your body gasps uncontrollably. In water below 50°F, roughly 1 in 5 people who fall in die within the first minute, even strong swimmers.

💪 PHYSICAL INCAPACITATION: In water below 60°F, your arms and legs can stop working within 10 minutes. You may be unable to swim, signal for help, or assist a rescuer.

🧊 HYPOTHERMIA: Water temps won't reach 70°F until July. Without a life jacket, drowning becomes likely before hypothermia even fully sets in.

✅ BEFORE YOU GO OUT:
• Always wear a life jacket - fastened
• Dress for the water temp, NOT the air temp (wetsuit or dry suit)
• Check weather AND water conditions before launching
• Never paddle alone
• Alcohol increases hypothermia risk - avoid it on the water

☃️Winter Storm Awareness & Preparedness 🌨️

A significant winter storm is increasingly likely to impact our area late Saturday night through Monday, followed by a prolonged stretch of frigid temperatures lasting from Friday night into the middle of next week.

What to Know:
• Confidence is increasing for 6 inches or more of snow, with a meaningful chance of 12 inches or more.
• Snow may begin late Saturday night and continue into Monday afternoon, with the heaviest snowfall on Sunday into Sunday night.
• Temperatures will remain well below freezing for several days, with sub-zero wind chills possible overnight.

What You Should Do Now:
• Plan for travel disruptions and consider limiting non-essential travel Sunday into Monday.
• Prepare your home for extended cold, including checking heat sources and protecting pipes.
• Make sure vehicles are winter-ready and emergency supplies are on hand.
• Check on neighbors who may need extra help during cold weather.

Forecast details will continue to be refined over the next few days, but now is the time to prepare. Stay alert for updates and plan ahead so you are not caught off guard.

12/26/2025

A wintry mix is expected to begin late this afternoon, with moderate to heavy snow developing between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Snowfall rates may exceed 1 inch per hour, causing rapidly deteriorating conditions during the evening commute.

Total accumulations of 5 to 9 inches of snow and sleet, plus a coating of ice, are expected, with the bulk falling Friday evening through early Saturday morning. A refreeze is likely Saturday evening as temperatures fall below freezing again. With slippery roads, dense snow/sleet, and overnight icing, hazardous travel conditions are likely.

❄️ Residents are advised to limit travel and stay indoors during severe weather.

❄️ No street parking from Friday at 7PM through Saturday at 7PM. Please move all vehicles to a driveway or municipal public parking lot.

❄️ Remove accumulated snow and ice from your vehicle before driving, once conditions are safe.
Clear sidewalks and fire hydrants within 24 hours after the storm ends.

❄️ If you must go outdoors, wear warm, dry clothing and cover exposed skin, including fingertips, earlobes, and noses.

❄️ Check on family, friends, and neighbors who may need help, especially older adults or individuals with disabilities.

❄️ Stay alert, by monitoring NWS New York Forecasts, NOAA weather radio, television and radio news, cable and satellite weather programming, and commercial services.
