🚣 COLD WATER SAFETY WEEK :: April 5-11 🚣
The weather is warming up and more people are heading out on the water. But don't let a 65-degree day fool you! Local water temperatures are still in the low 40s, and won't reach 60 degrees until late May.
Cold water kills fast. Here's why:
🌊 COLD SHOCK: When you hit cold water, your body gasps uncontrollably. In water below 50°F, roughly 1 in 5 people who fall in die within the first minute, even strong swimmers.
💪 PHYSICAL INCAPACITATION: In water below 60°F, your arms and legs can stop working within 10 minutes. You may be unable to swim, signal for help, or assist a rescuer.
🧊 HYPOTHERMIA: Water temps won't reach 70°F until July. Without a life jacket, drowning becomes likely before hypothermia even fully sets in.
✅ BEFORE YOU GO OUT:
• Always wear a life jacket - fastened
• Dress for the water temp, NOT the air temp (wetsuit or dry suit)
• Check weather AND water conditions before launching
• Never paddle alone
• Alcohol increases hypothermia risk - avoid it on the water
