Could your be the next gamechanger for the warfighter? Emerging capabilities in AI, digital twins, immersive , intelligent agents, advanced , and human performance are rapidly reshaping the future of . We are seeking innovative solutions that are ready (or at least nearly ready) to deliver operational impact across , simulation, , and .

As part of the Next Big Thing (NBT) program at I/ITSEC 26 in December, selected innovators will have the opportunity to present live during a high-energy “Shark Tank”-style event. Each selected team will deliver a 5-minute pitch and demonstration, followed by 5 minutes of Q&A with senior government leaders and defense decision-makers. Top presentations may lead to follow-on discussions, partnerships, pilot opportunities, or accelerated adoption conversations during the conference.

We invite submissions from companies, , , and developers with emerging capabilities aligned to current and future needs. Areas of interest include AI-enabled and adaptive training, digital twins, / / / , human-AI teaming, intelligent agents, Live, , and Constructive training, mission rehearsal, human performance technologies, resilience, synthetic environments, and scalable simulation architectures.

Priority will be given to technologies that are demonstrable and suitable for near-term evaluation or integration, such as solutions at Technology Readiness Levels or higher. We are especially interested in that support Department of War priorities including readiness, lethality, distributed training, interoperability, all-domain operations, and AI/ML integration.

Engineering the Future Force: Exclusive Interview with the Secretary of the U.S. Air Force
(*excerpts from a story about Dr. Troy E. Meink, the 27th Secretary of the Air Force, and his interview at the recent EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026)

Dr. Meink discussed the challenge of balancing today’s readiness with tomorrow’s modernization. He also addressed the growing role of simulation in pilot training, the challenge of recruiting and retaining skilled maintainers, the use of artificial intelligence in logistics and maintenance planning, the importance of STEM outreach, and the need to improve acquisition speed while reducing unnecessary bureaucracy.

“We have to stay ahead. The United States needs to maintain its technological advantage. That advantage has benefited us not only from a national security perspective, but from an economic security perspective as well. It really underpins the whole system. So, we have to continue modernizing to preserve that advantage. At the same time, as you pointed out, we have to maintain the ability to fight tonight and fight tomorrow. It’s a constant balancing act. We’re simply not going to be able to keep every part of the force at the readiness level we’d ideally like to maintain. That means we have to make difficult decisions about which parts of the force require the highest readiness to support operations around the world.”

“So, there is an increasing emphasis being placed on simulators and on the ability to tie all of those simulations together so you can conduct much more complex training, not just for new pilots coming into the force, but also for experienced pilots maintaining their proficiency. In many cases, you simply can’t conduct these kinds of operations in the real world because we don’t have the airspace to do it. So, we’re investing heavily in building out that capability within our simulator enterprise so we can train for those scenarios. It’s also much, much less expensive than flying the actual aircraft, so you’re going to see a lot more simulator time devoted to that kind of training.
A big part of the T-7A program was bringing in very high-end simulators to train pilots. As a result, much more of their training will take place in simulators, where they can practice these very complex scenarios that are extremely difficult to replicate in the aircraft. We simply don’t have the airspace, or the ability to create that level of complexity, in live flying. Those are exactly the kinds of exercises you can accomplish in the simulator that you just couldn’t do otherwise.”

“When we look at recruiting, I feel very fortunate as Secretary of the Air Force because both the Air Force and the Space Force met our recruiting goals pretty early this year. That means we’re not simply focused on reaching a number, we’re focused on attracting the most highly qualified people we can into the service.
As we were just discussing, we’re designing, building, flying, and maintaining some of the most complex systems ever built by humans. So, it’s not just about having enough people; it’s about having people who are capable of doing that work. When we come to an event like this, we’re looking for people who are interested in serving and who are interested in aviation and space.”

“We have to continue integrating hardware, sensors, automation, communications, and the IT infrastructure into those systems so they can work together. We need to improve command and control. If you look at the Pacific, C2 is one of our biggest challenges. It’s not just about modernizing individual platforms, it’s about connecting those systems so we can fuse information and distribute data to the force, wherever they happen to be operating around the world. That’s absolutely essential.”

“On the Space Force side, there are a number of missions that simply didn’t exist before. From both a national security and deterrence perspective, I believe many of those are among the most important programs in the entire Department of War, not just within the Department of the Air Force.
Getting those programs into production, fielding them operationally, expanding the Space Force, and training the workforce to operate those systems are all essential. If we want to maintain our advantage, we have to succeed in those areas.”

“A big part of that is making sure we do all of this efficiently. I’m a strong believer in reducing bureaucracy and improving the way we acquire systems. We’re doing a great deal of work in acquisition transformation, not because transformation is the goal itself, but because it’s the tool that allows us to accomplish everything we’ve just talked about. We have to simplify the acquisition process so we can move faster and be more flexible. We, also have a responsibility to spend taxpayer dollars wisely, so efficiency is a major focus for me.”

Congratulations to this impressive UCF team!

Imagine walking through Paris, inspecting a disaster zone or treating a patient hundreds of miles away — all without leaving the room.

That’s the future a team of University of Central Florida ( ) researchers is building, and their groundbreaking work has earned international recognition.

A team of UCF researchers has won an industry award for using robotics and digital twins to blend human intuition with technological innovation.

Their work, Be There Without Being There: Humanoid Robot Immersive Telepresence, received the Auggie Award for Best Interaction Product at this year’s Augmented World Expo in Long Beach, California.

The award-winning UCF team includes computer science student researchers Judah Rowe ’23 ’25MS, junior Liam Abramov, seniors Seniah McField and Megan Bailey, Assistant Professor Mohsen Rakhshan, and is led by UCF Institute for Simulation & Training Interim Director and Agere Chair Professor of Computer Science Carolina Cruz-Neira. In addition to this honor, Cruz-Neira received the 2026 Auggie Award for Innovator of the Year.

Together, they developed a system that pairs a humanoid robot with an immersive digital environment, allowing a person to interact with a remote location as if they were physically there.

The technology creates a real-time digital twin of the robot’s surroundings while mapping the user’s body movements directly onto the robot.

The United States Space Force chose 15 companies to compete to build out its advanced live and simulated and range - a high priority for service officials who say they lack the equipment and infrastructure to prepare to operate in an increasingly contested environment.

Space Systems Command - SSC on July 31 established a $981 million ceiling for the 10-year effort dubbed the National Space Test and Training Complex Innovative Technology and Engineering - Space Test and Range, or NITE-STAR. The service will use the contract to issue task orders for elements of the physical training environment on the ground as well as a future live, on-orbit range. That could include things like , , and instrumentation.

“This initiative will target advancement of the sophisticated systems and required to keep Guardians ahead of the complexities of a contested space domain,” SSC said in a statement. “NITE-STAR ensures the Space Force remains prepared for high-stakes scenarios.”

For the last few years, the service has been working closely with commercial companies to field quick solutions to meet its near-term test and training needs, awarding one-off through various rapid contract mechanisms. While that piecemeal approach has served the service well, officials have said it’s not sustainable for the long term. Contracts like NITE-STAR are meant to lay the longer-term foundation for more high-fidelity live and training .

The United States Air Force has taken control of the Pentagon’s long-delayed effort to field jam-resistant GPS receivers, an organizational shift intended to close a persistent gap between developing the and installing it aboard military aircraft, ships, vehicles and weapons.

The transfer, announced July 23, puts the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center in charge of the Military GPS User Equipment program’s first two increments. The program, known as , had been managed by the United States Space Force and has experienced years of technical setbacks, schedule slips and divided responsibility among the organizations developing receiver technology and the services expected to put it into use.

The move gives the Air Force center responsibility for developing, integrating and sustaining equipment capable of receiving M-code, an encrypted military signal designed to provide more secure positioning, navigation and timing when conventional signals are being jammed or spoofed.

The Space Force will continue to operate the GPS satellite constellation and its ground control network. The Air Force will manage much of the equipment that allows aircraft, ships, ground vehicles, weapons and personnel to use the military signal.

The next step toward further integrating semiautonomous aircraft into the United States Air Force and building trust with human operators would be through and exercises, said former Air Force secretary said Frank Kendall in a roundtable hosted by Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies. He was discussed that gathering experience in the field and through simulations help operators establish trust with systems, like the Collaborative Combat Aircraft ( ).

“You have to accumulate a basis for trust over time, and so I think we just need to think carefully about how we structure things in order to make that opportunity,” Kendall said during the roundtable.

Earlier this week, the Air Force announced that it conducted the first-ever live-fire test of an inert AIM-120 from an Anduril-made YFQ-44A. The CCA recently completed an end-to-end, beyond-line-of-sight strike against a simulated target, the service announced, but did not specify when the exercise occurred.
