September 1–7 is Workplace Lactation Week.

Imagine returning to work and knowing you won't have to apologize for taking a pump break, rush because someone is waiting for the room, or choose between expressing milk and keeping up with your responsibilities. You know your needs have been planned for, and you know who will cover your duties while you're away. That's what meaningful workplace support can look like.

Federal law requires covered employers to provide reasonable break time and an appropriate private space for nursing employees. But employers can choose to do more than meet the minimum. When employees feel supported during the postpartum period, they're more likely to stay loyal to their employer. They know their employer values them as people, not just as workers. That means fewer employees leaving, fewer positions to fill, and less time and money spent recruiting and training new staff.

The benefits don't stop with the employee who is pumping. When employees see their workplace supporting parents, they see a company that values families, respects its employees, and understands that people have lives outside of work. That reputation can help attract and retain a stronger workforce.

Supporting lactating employees isn't just the right thing to do. It's a win for employees, families and employers.

September 1–7 is Workplace Lactation Week.

Did you know that federal law protects many employees who need to pump at work?

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, most nursing employees have the right to reasonable break time to express human milk for their nursing child for up to one year after the child's birth. They also have the right to a private, functional space that is shielded from view and free from intrusion. And there is one important detail: That space cannot be a bathroom.

The space does not necessarily have to be a permanent lactation room. Employers can use a temporary space, such as an office or conference room, as long as it meets the requirements and is available when the employee needs it. The amount of time and number of breaks needed can vary from one parent to another.

Knowing your rights can help you have a more informed conversation with your employer before returning to work. Save this post to come back to later, or share it with a parent who is preparing to return to work.

πŸ“’ Meet Our New Leader! 🌟

We're thrilled to welcome AnaMarie Hinton to La Leche League Alliance! AnaMarie is with LLL of KY/TN, and part of the La Leche League of Sevier County Group.

"I have become a Leader because, where I live, we lack support for breastfeeding moms. La Leche League helped me so much with my nursing journeys. I want to make sure women near me have access to the wonderful group that is LLL, locally!

Fun fact: I have been skydiving in Florida and got to see both the east and west coastlines at once! "

Join us in celebrating AnaMarie's commitment to empowering families and creating a warm, inclusive community.

September 1–7 is Workplace Lactation Week. We recognize the parents who are balancing work and feeding their babies, and the employers and coworkers who help make that possible.

Workplace support can take many forms: a private place to pump, a manager who respects pumping breaks, or a coworker who says, β€œI’ve got this while you take your break.” A supportive workplace can make a real difference to breastfeeding families.

Black Breastfeeding Week is August 25–31.

There is something beautiful about what can be carried from one generation to the next.
For generations, Black women have nourished their babies, shared wisdom, supported one another, and found joy in caring for their families.

Breastfeeding can be part of that legacy. A mother nursing her baby. A grandmother sharing her experience. An aunt offering encouragement. A community making space for a new parent to learn, grow, and find their own way.

The knowledge may change. The circumstances may change. But the love, connection, and care that surround our babies can continue from one generation to the next.

This Black Breastfeeding Week, we celebrate the women who came before us, the women caring for babies today, and the generations still to come.

We celebrate the joy of nourishing our babies.
We celebrate the wisdom we carry forward.
We celebrate the community that holds us up.

Happy Black Breastfeeding Week.

πŸ“’ Meet Our New Leader! 🌟

We're thrilled to welcome Lauren Gomez to La Leche League Alliance! She is with LLL of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas (ALMA) and part of the Madison County, Alabama Group.

"I wanted to become a Leader so I could support breastfeeding families and serve as a resource
within my community. By helping bridge gaps, providing resources, and offering encouragement throughout the breastfeeding journey, I hope to support parents in feeling empowered, confident, and connected.

Fun Fact: I love the little things in life such as a crispy Diet Coke, nighttime treat, and a sunset
walk around my neighborhood with my family! :)"

Join us in celebrating Lauren's commitment to empowering families and creating a warm, inclusive community.

Black Breastfeeding Week is August 25–31.

For some families, finding breastfeeding support can mean finding someone who understands their experiences, culture, concerns, and community.

Black lactation professionals, peer supporters, health care providers, and family members are helping create spaces where Black families can ask questions, find encouragement, and feel supported in their breastfeeding goals.

Representation alone does not eliminate barriers. But having support that feels welcoming, respectful, and responsive matters.

This Black Breastfeeding Week, we celebrate the people who show up for Black families. Who was part of your breastfeeding support system?
