As we head into respiratory virus season, staying protected matters more than ever. I recently received my Flu and COVID-19 shots, which are especially important for seniors, who face a higher risk of serious illness and hospitalization. Getting vaccinated helps safeguard your health, supports our healthcare system, and keeps our community strong. A small step today can make a big difference all season long in keeping ourselves, our families and our community safe.

On Friday, September 11, 2026, the Orlando Fire Department will hold its annual September 11 Candlelight Remembrance Ceremony to recognize and honor the 404 first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice 25 years ago.

As part of the ceremony, OFD firefighters will pay tribute and memorialize New York City Fire Department Firefighters including Michael J. Arriaga, the crew at FDNY Firehouse 10, and the numerous first responders who lost their lives since due to exposure of toxic chemicals and debris. The speakers will also discuss the lasting impact September 11 has had on the fire service at Fire Station 1.

Fire personnel will light 404 candles to commemorate all the first responders who perished that day; 343 red candles to honor the firefighters, 60 blue candles to honor the law enforcement officers, New York Police Department and Port Authority and one white candle for FDNY Chaplain Fr. Mychal Judge. Twenty-five fire hats will be laid to commemorate the each year since the attack.

Since 2002, OFD has hosted this event honoring the first responders who paid the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the World Trade Center following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack.

Today, on International Day of Charity, we celebrate the compassion, generosity, and humanity that bring people together. Every act of kindness—big or small—has the power to uplift communities, offer hope, and spark meaningful change. Let’s use this day as a reminder that giving isn’t just about resources; it’s about sharing our time, empathy, and support with those who need it most. Together, we can make a difference.

This week I had the opportunity to ride with Tesla’s Robotaxi, bringing reliable, convenient, and fully driverless travel to Orlando. Robotaxi combines Tesla’s automated driving technology and renowned vehicle hardware design to create a personalized driverless experience that is reliable and convenient. The car handled everything smoothly while I sat back and enjoyed the comfort of a fully autonomous Tesla.

The test drive included multiple parts of District 1, along SR 528, starting at Dutch Brothers, and then going along to the Dairy Queen and Vista Lakes Elementary. With support for 29 languages, the Robotaxi is accessible to all with space for service animals, assistive devices, and Braille controls, allowing everyone to ride independently.

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Cares Move-In Celebration at the Boys and Girls Club in Orlando.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul connects with community partners to feed, clothe, house and heal individuals and families in our community who have nowhere else to turn for help.

From rental assistance and homelessness prevention, to thrift stores and food pantries, to disaster recovery and charitable pharmacies, SVdP is an organization that continues to contribute to our communities and help those in need.

Great conversations at MetroPlan Orlando's Central Florida Micromobility Safety Initiative Regional RoundTable! It was an inspiring gathering of planners, policymakers, mobility experts, and community partners all committed to building safer, more connected transportation systems for our region. In attendance from the City of Orlando was our Director of Transportation as well as our Micromobility Manager.

From emerging safety research to infrastructure design, enforcement considerations, and cross-agency coordination, the conversations reinforced how crucial collaboration is to shaping a transportation future where innovation and safety work hand in hand.

As an alternate board member, it’s exciting to see Central Florida taking a proactive, collaborative stance on micromobility — especially as e‑bikes play an increasingly important role in transportation. I’m grateful to be part of these efforts and to support initiatives that help create safer streets, more connected networks, and a transportation system that meets the needs of a rapidly evolving region.
