Here’s a fun activity for kids to do tomorrow!

Don't mow that lawn just yet! If you've got dandelions and other "flowers" in your yard, we have a fun activity to do with your kids - flower pounding!
We will go live with the basic details and a demonstration tomorrow - Sat., Apr 25 at 10:00 am.
All that's required for this is paper, a hammer (yes, parents, you will want to supervise) and whatever flowers you can find.

Sometimes we all just need a minute...

"I'm just feeling upset, but I need to hide my face so people won't see,” my four year old cried.

"I understand. Do you want to sit with me or do you want to hide by yourself?" I asked her.

"I just want to be by myself for a minute," she answered.

And so I let her. She laid her head down in the booth to hide her face and I ate my chips and salsa. I didn't yell. I didn't whisper threats. I didn't demand that she pull it together when the other restaurant patrons looked our way.

She was clear about what she needed. I let her have it.

The food came. She ate. Half way through she said, "I'm still feeling a little sad, but I think I'm feeling a little better."

I smiled and said, "I'm glad." There was no need for more words. She didn't need a recap of her behavior or extra attention on her need for a reset.
She needed a minute, you guys.

Sometimes I need a minute. Sometimes we all need a minute. Sometimes we're hangry or tired or frustrated or disappointed. Sometimes there's no obvious reason- we just need a minute and I'm not sure when we all decided that it's not okay to need a minute.

So, hey, if you need a minute then ask for it. Say it clearly. Put your head down or excuse yourself or take a deep breath. Do what you need to do. If you need a minute, take a minute.

And if your person needs a minute, respect that need. Sip your tea and dip your chips. Let your person have a minute, because when loved ones can say what they need and those needs are honored, trust is built and love is strengthened.

The Hands Free Revolution

As kids return home today from the first day of school it can be hard to get them to open up about how it went. Here's a great list of conversation starters that encourage kids to share about their day. My favorites include: "What is something you would have liked to do different today?" "Who was kind to you today?" "Did you learn something that you'd never known before?" These give kids a chance to think about their day and to share something with you. Try these over dinner or at bedtime, you might be surprised what you hear!

I loved contributing to this article on Motherly. It provided a much needed reminder of what can happen when I take a little extra thought and time to know what's on my children's hearts and minds.

Last night, I asked my 11-year-old a variation of one of the questions from this list. I said, “If you could be anyone in your school for a day, who would it be?” She immediately chose a teacher whose classroom theme is “Mr. McCord's Happy Campers.” Her reasoning: “I just really want to know the secret behind those happy campers.” I fell over. It was the best laugh I have had in awhile. I also asked, “Did you feel worried at any time in school today?” And my happy-go-lucky, laid back child told me something I would have never guessed would worry her. Luckily, this gave us a chance to work through it. Friends, it only takes a moment to scan this list. One of these questions will pop out at you, and it will come in handy later today. Btw, many of these questions are good for adults too! #goodquestion #starttheconversation #knowyoubetter #ToBeKnownistoBeLoved

P.S. I am putting three of my favorite questions from the article in the first comment box to help me remember them later. Feel free to highlight any that really struck you. Thanks for being part of The Hands Free Revolution.
