I am grateful for the safety of the law enforcement officers who risk their lives every day to protect us. It is important for all to remember there are separately elected administrations involved, including the Elkhart Mayor's Office overseeing the involved agency, the County Sheriff's Office overseeing the investigation, and the County Prosecutor's Office determining whether any charges were warranted. These represent the checks and balances of our system of government and it works.

Anyone who defended the actions of this misguided and dangerous youth or maligned the police officers or Prosecutor should be ashamed of themselves. While his death is certainly a tragedy, he threatened and fired upon the officers putting himself and all of his friends in mortal danger. We should be thankful no one else was hurt.

No charges will be filed against two officers after a months-long investigation into the February death of a 17-year-old boy.

A message from Beech Grove Police Chief Michael Maurice:

"It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that today we lost one of our very own, Officer Brian Elliott. Officer Elliott, along with two other Beech Grove Police Department officers, was dispatched at 6:08 p.m. to the 100 block of Diplomat Court for a disturbance. After they arrived, Officer Elliott and another officer were shot. Both officers were rushed to Eskenazi Hospital, but despite the best lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, Officer Elliott succumbed to his injuries. The other officer, who we are not naming at this time, is currently in stable condition and is expected to survive.

My heart goes out to Brian’s wife, Erin, his parents, and all of his family, friends, and loved ones. At this time, I am asking that we lean on one another to get through this.

We are grateful to the team at Eskenazi Hospital, and our law enforcement and community partners for their extraordinary response and support."

As we walked into the Statehouse today for the first day of Session, 2026, there was an unusual hush. Initially, I was concerned for the turnout for the 22nd Annual PSP Indiana Opening Prayer Service. But then I witnessed the quietest crowd I had ever seen in the Statehouse, with their heads all bowed in reverent prayer to God.
