Steeped in mystery: Dubuque-based best-selling author Gudenkauf ready for latest book

Those of you who attended ICRA's annual convention in Dubuque last June sat through a great session with best-selling author Heather Gudenkauf. She's got a new book coming out so thought we'd share this article that appeared in the Dubuque paper today.

It had been 25 years since 16-year-old Eve Knox had been found, lifeless and hidden within the caves near her home in small-town Grotto, Iowa.

Happy Friday! Here's a fun brain-bender for you to download, share or take a screenshot of. Not stenography related, but seems like the kind of mental puzzle stenographers would enjoy.

Today is supposably (see what we did there?) National Grammar Day. How did we almost overlook this important day? It should be designated a holiday for stenographers.

Irregardless (we’re shameless!) here’s a fun fact for you: National Grammar Day, which is celebrated on March 4, was established in 2008 by Martha Brockenbrough. She is the author of "Things That Make Us [Sic]" and founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar (SPOGG).

Brockenbrough declared, “Language is something to be celebrated, and March 4 is the perfect day to do it. It’s not only a date, it’s an imperative: March forth on March 4 to speak well, write well, and help others do the same!”

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) Captioning Compared to Human Stenographic Captioning

Watch the video linked below for just 30 seconds and you will realize how irreplaceable stenographers are. Right side of the video is what stenographers do. Left side is what we’ve been hearing for many years will replace us. Stenographers are the true guardians of the record.

Bill Amor, Exonerated After 22+ Years – Exoneration Project

Check out this short and fascinating article on Bill Amor's wrongful conviction. No doubt verbatim trial transcripts, in addition to the newly discovered evidence, helped exonerate Mr. Amor. Bill spent 22 years behind bars and he will be attending our Midyear Seminar on February 29, together with featured speaker Erica Nichols Cook.

Be sure to register for convention and hear Bill's story and other great speakers we've got lined up for you!

We're reposting one of our original and favorite Valentine's Day posts from last year. Lots of people and groups shared this picture to spread love and joy AND lots of people bellyached over the image. There was a typo in the original graphic that we quickly fixed, but it went viral before we caught it. OOPS! The bellyaching wasn't because people ate too many candy hearts but about the lack of punctuation on our candy hearts. Real candy hearts aren't perfect and neither are we! Just enjoy the humor and pass it along if you want.

We're working on something just as creative for Valentine's Day this year, so stay tuned and check back with ICRA often next week.

Once again a stenographer was front and center capturing the spoken word at the February 4, 2020, State of the Union address. The photo below was published in the LA Times.

The material quoted below is an excerpt of a recent statement made by Max Curry, NCRA President. Thank you, Max. Well said.

"Stenographers have a centuries-old honored legacy of keeping the record of the spoken word so that the public can rely on and be protected by the transcripts of important proceedings. The stenographer sews the fabric of freedom via the record. And now, by keeping pace with and incorporating all available technology, the modern stenographer brings an impartial, reliable, and formidable presence as the keepers of history in these spoken proceedings.'

Behind The Scenes With WGBH’s Media Access Group On Super Bowl Sunday

Some Monday morning armchair quarterbacking of sorts for you! What a great gig for sports lovers!

“It’s like being an athlete,” Mahoney said, pointing out that a relief pitcher would never go to the mound without preparation, and neither would she.

"Before the game, Mahoney will spend time studying up on all of the coaches and players on each team so that she’s ready to write about anyone whom the announcers mention. She’ll also dig into all sorts of Super Bowl history, including past Most Valuable Players, so that, as those stats and players are mentioned, she can type them up in real-time."

A little holiday humor.
I’ve been a reporter 36 years (edited my own work) and a scopist now for two years. I work with a team of scopists and proofreaders on CaseCatalyst, and we are experts on Real Team, providing dailies as well as regular turnaround work on court work, depositions, and arbitrations. With the shortage of court reporters, the need for scopists is growing, so if anyone would like more information, feel free to send me a message or email me at [email protected] We provided daily transcripts for the first 33-day opioid trial! It was amazing!! Most importantly, enjoy your day!!
