Your ICRA Board was hard at work this morning!

We received some updates from our lobbyist — all positive!

Good news came from DMACC — four grads this summer and a full class of theory students this fall semester!

We made some decisions about midyear seminar — still planning to be in-person, with social distancing. Mark your calendars! November 14th in Newton.

We also have some exciting things coming your way in relation to COVID — steno-themed face masks coming soon!

Congratulations to current Official Director Megan Sankey and to past Freelance Director Michele Proesch!

ICRA Members: On Tuesday, June 16, the Board sent an email to the membership with an update on the FLSA issue. There has been feedback some members didn't receive the email as it landed in their "promotions" folder. So if you are reading this and you haven't seen the FLSA email, please check all your possible email folders so you are up to speed. Thanks!

Steeped in mystery: Dubuque-based best-selling author Gudenkauf ready for latest book

Those of you who attended ICRA's annual convention in Dubuque last June sat through a great session with best-selling author Heather Gudenkauf. She's got a new book coming out so thought we'd share this article that appeared in the Dubuque paper today.

It had been 25 years since 16-year-old Eve Knox had been found, lifeless and hidden within the caves near her home in small-town Grotto, Iowa.

A few Friday follies for you.

What day do chickens hate the most?
Fry day.

How does a chicken tell time?
1 o'cluck, 2 o'cluck, etc.

What do you call a chicken crossing the road?
Poultry in motion.

What the cluck? You didn't like them? Feel free to share your favorite Friday folly with us! Have a great weekend!

Happy Friday! Here's a fun brain-bender for you to download, share or take a screenshot of. Not stenography related, but seems like the kind of mental puzzle stenographers would enjoy.

Today is supposably (see what we did there?) National Grammar Day. How did we almost overlook this important day? It should be designated a holiday for stenographers.

Irregardless (we’re shameless!) here’s a fun fact for you: National Grammar Day, which is celebrated on March 4, was established in 2008 by Martha Brockenbrough. She is the author of "Things That Make Us [Sic]" and founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar (SPOGG).

Brockenbrough declared, “Language is something to be celebrated, and March 4 is the perfect day to do it. It’s not only a date, it’s an imperative: March forth on March 4 to speak well, write well, and help others do the same!”

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) Captioning Compared to Human Stenographic Captioning

Watch the video linked below for just 30 seconds and you will realize how irreplaceable stenographers are. Right side of the video is what stenographers do. Left side is what we’ve been hearing for many years will replace us. Stenographers are the true guardians of the record.

A little holiday humor.
I’ve been a reporter 36 years (edited my own work) and a scopist now for two years. I work with a team of scopists and proofreaders on CaseCatalyst, and we are experts on Real Team, providing dailies as well as regular turnaround work on court work, depositions, and arbitrations. With the shortage of court reporters, the need for scopists is growing, so if anyone would like more information, feel free to send me a message or email me at [email protected] We provided daily transcripts for the first 33-day opioid trial! It was amazing!! Most importantly, enjoy your day!!
He worked as an accomplished court reporter, first in Iowa, then for more than 25 years in the prestigious Chancery Court in Wilmington.
Anyone writing on a Lightspeed? Ready to upgrade my Diamante, I think. . . Saw the Luminex II just came out. Tempted by the Lightspeed, though!
Officals, how much take-home work do you have, specifically Polk County?
