The scholarship committee has made their selections and Congratulations to Layla Carney and Landi Helgevold from Clarke Community School who were selected to each receive a $600.00 scholarship, and Bailey Fredrick from Murray Community School was also selected to receive a $600 scholarship from Osceola Masonic Lodge # 77 AF &AM.
It's too bad that these young adults couldn't receive their scholarships at an awards ceremony so we could get pictures, however we hope to run them down in the near future for a photo. Congratulations to all!

Why are we loosing membership!

I’m the guy who asked to join your organization. I’m
the guy who paid his dues to join. I’m the guy who stood
up in front of all of you and promised to be faithful and
loyal. I’m the guy who came to your meetings and no one
paid any attention to. I tried several times to be friendly
to some of the fellows, but they all had their own buddies
they talked to and sat next to.
I sat down several times but no one paid any attention
to me. I hoped very much that somebody would have
asked me to take part in a fund raising project or
something, but no one saw my efforts when I
volunteered.
I missed a few meetings after joining because I was
sick and couldn’t be there. No one asked me at the next
meeting where I had been. I guess it didn’t matter very
much to the others whether I was there or not.
The next meeting I decided to stay home and watch
TV. The following meeting I attended, no one asked me
where I was when the last meeting was held.
You might say I’m a good guy, a good family man who
holds a responsible job, loves his community, and his
country.
You know who else I am? I’m the guy who never came
back!
It amuses me when I think back on how the heads of
the organization and the members were discussing why
the organization was losing members. It amuses me now
to think that they spent so much time looking for new
members when I was there all the time. All they needed
to do was make me feel needed, wanted and welcome!

What Is Freemasonry? I am the past, present and future — I belong to all ages. I am steeped in tradition and I tread the pages of history. I circle the globe and I stand at the crossroads of the world. I have rites and words that have beauty, sympathy and rhythm. I place upon my pedestal holy writ and I turn to God in prayer. I have knowledge, wisdom and secrets locked in my bosom, which I give to men who come desiring me in their hearts. I speculate with all the tools of operative masonry and I translate their use into moral and spiritual building. I await free men of mature age, sound judgment and strict morals, and of good report — but I solicit none. I admit them of their own free will and accord and teach them brotherhood and charity. I travel the roads of peace and harmony and I walk in the ways of charity. I answer the cry of the orphan and sustain the widow and the aged. I render aid to the poor, the sick and the distressed. I am a way of life which teaches immortality. I lead men from darkness to light. I Am Freemasonry.
> The Cornucopia as a symbol of abundance and of nourishment stretches back to Classical Antiquity (a period of time in the Mediterranean that generally encompasses the Greco-Roman period). It is most commonly associated with Zeus, King of the Greek gods. When Zeus was born he was hidden away by his mother to prevent Kronos, his father, from eating him, as he did Zeus' siblings. Kronos in doing this was trying to prevent the fulfillment of a prophecy that one of his children would destroy him. While Zeus was in hiding from his father, he was fed and cared for by various divine attendants including Amalthea (the Nourishing Goddess) who appeared in the form of a goat. The legend states that Zeus accidentally broke off one her horns. Later he gave to the horn to the world of man as it would provide whatever was desired. In other myths of the period, Heracles (the Roman equivalent of Hercules) broke off the horn of a river god, with similar results as Amalthea's horn. The Cornucopia is associated with a variety of gods and goddesses around the Mediterranean. The one Greek God that the Cornucopia is associated that is probably most fascinating to Freemasons, is it's association with Pluto, god of the underworld. This version of the God of the Underworld, formerly Hades, was taught in the Mystery Religions, sometimes called the sacred mysteries or mysteries. The Mystery Religions of the Greco-Roman world were religious schools that were only for the initiates. At least one source about the Mystery Religions states that "The main characterization of this religion is the secrecy associated with the particulars of the initiation and the ritual practice, which may not be revealed to outsiders." Pluto, probably to show the difference between him and Hades, is often depicted holding a Cornucopia in contrast to Hades who is depicted holding a drinking horn. Pluto was the giver of agriculture, mineral and spiritual wealth. In modern times the Cornucopia has been adopted the world over as a symbol of prosperity and abundance. This is especially true in North America. In Canada an annual festival called Cornucopia is held. In several Central and South American countries the Cornucopia is depicted on their coat of arms. In the United States several states have the Cornucopia on their state flags and on state seals. It is most closely tied in the United States with the Thanksgiving Holiday. For Freemasons the Cornucopia is most commonly known as the symbol for the stewards who are stationed in the Masonic South. The Masonic South is tied with nourishment of the brothers. Often one of the duties of the stewards is to help with meal preparation and other times when nourishment is provided to the members of the lodge.
