PROTECT CALIFORNIA COASTAL ACT - ELDERCARE PROJECT, organized by Pacific Palisades Residents Association Pacific Palisades

Dear Community,

PPRA's appeal of approvals of the Highlands eldercare project by the City, the Coastal Commission, and a lower court is in the briefing stage at the California 2nd District Court of Appeal. PPRA is confident of the positions it has taken in its appeal, but now faces additional costs caused in part by the clerk of the lower court's delays in transmitting the paperwork from the prior proceedings to the appellate court.

Please donate today to support PPRA's efforts in pursuing its appeal. We truly appreciate everyone coming together to fight the good fight.

Westchester Park Is Again under Siege as Transients Keep Setting Up Tents

Our humanitarian crisis is only getting worse.

A Westchester resident wrote Circling the News on August 31, “Just when we thought we could breathe a sigh of relief, we were pulled in again.” According to the resident, a Tuff Shed (small storage structure) was delivered to Westchester Park on August 30 and two men put it together so that a co...

Together We Saved the Beaches and Parks of Los Angeles District 11

Thank you to each and everyone of you for participating in the defense of our Beaches and Parks. It was a pleasure to collaborate with so many of you. It was a lot of hard work, laughter, passion and camaraderie. PPRA was proud to join all of Los Angeles district 11 in defeating the City proposition of creating sheds for the homeless at the districts' beaches and parks. Thank you to everyone who supported us, collaborated with us and did their part in standing up for public safety and proper dignified efficient solutions to our humanitarian crisis. It is on all Angelenos to come together to end our humanitarian crisis and we must continue to do our part for the future of Los Angeles and our children.

Now is the Time to Come Together Los Angeles

Now is the time to Come Together. The CAO announced that beaches and parks in CD 11 are not feasible locations for tiny homes. While we have avoided the catastrophe of a bad idea, we still have a humanitarian crisis on our hands. NOW is the time to stand up for compassionate reasonable solutions to our homeless crisis. When we end bad policies, we end bad outcomes.

Sheriffs leadership in CD11

We are so grateful for all the work the Sheriffs are doing to keep us safe. We are particularly grateful for their leadership role in assuring public safety on our streets. The LAPD's hands might be tied by the politics/policies of the city but our Sheriffs are still able and willing to do the job they are elected and paid to show up for.

Dockweiler Beach - a cool place under the sun

Dockweiler Beach is facing losing 400 parking spots so that a temporary, 3 year, homeless encampment can be created to place 75 street dwellers in metal sheds on the parking lot. This is part of Councilmember Bonin's plan to solve homelessness in his district. Not only will these encampments not solve or aid the most critical issues street dwellers face (severe mental illness and substance abuse), but it will also take away from Angelenos who rely heavily on access to public recreational spaces for their wellbeing. Los Angeles, as a city, already rates low on access to public recreational spaces: taking away access to parking at Dockweiler is an environmental injustice to all the Los Angeles disadvantaged communities as well as an injustice to anyone wanting access to the beach.

If we want to create real solutions to the humanitarian crisis in Los Angeles, we must join the LA Alliance and Sheriff Villanueva and demand a state of emergency. https://www.change.org/p/declare-a-state-of-emergency-for-the-los-angeles-homeless-crisis

Venice Boardwalk Migration

Venice Boardwalk Migration.
PPRA is collaborating with Envision LA to bring you solutions for a better LA.
The recent clean up of Venice Boardwalk has displaced many of the unhoused living there and moved them into other communities. Venice Boardwalk has approximately 200 unhoused, LA has in the whereabouts of 100,000 unhoused. We must address the issues at their core. We have a m**h epidemic. We have failed housing first programs and policies that prevent agencies and law enforcement from implementing life changing services. Help us end suffering on our streets, demand a state of emergency today.

PPRA President Jessica Rogers interviews Julie Zaller of Westchester

PPRA President Jessica Rogers and Julie Zaller, Famous Westchester Mom Group Leader, talk about the demise of Westchester Park. The residents are at a loss as despair, crime, violence and danger increases daily. The City remains silent to their pleas for help and law enforcement is non existent. Criminals take advantage of the unhoused and drugs are rampant all over the park. It's another m**h village created in the heart of the loving community of Westchester.

What will happen now that the City Office in opening in Westchester Park?

Thank you to the Frontline Workers of the Palisades Fire

PPRA and Palisadians gathered to thank all the frontline workers, of our community and surrounding communities, who come together to keep us safe on a daily basis. Thank you to all LAFD (Station 23 and 69 in particular), LAPD, LASD, Cal Fire, all other local fire departments, PPTFH, local private security services and all other community members who volunteer their time to improve our quality of life. We truly appreciate the great choices you make, your dedication, fearlessness, courage, bravery and strong modeling for our community. We are extremely grateful you kept everyone safe during the Palisades Fire and the Bluffs Fire. We could never thank you enough.

The City of LA is at a Turning Point

The City of Los Angeles is at a Turning Point. Palisadians we need to continue to unite across our community, our district and Los Angeles as a whole. This is such a critical time that the Young Family has decided to come out of their anonymity and speak out to protect our history and the land we cherish so much.

For decades the Young family has dedicated their lives for the protection of the California Coast and our Park Land. The Young family joins PPRA with a matching grant of $5,000 to protect our beaches and parks. Please make your dollars doubly count. Donate to PPRA general fund or to our legal fund at www.palisadesresidents.com

If you want to be part of our growing coalition across the district, reach out and we will connect you.

Mel Wingfield Palisadian m**h addict with Lived Experience on Venice Boardwalk

Mel Wingfield is a Palisades father of two young boys who got addicted to m**h and ended up living on the Venice Boardwalk for many months. Mel tells PPRA about his struggle to save his life, start over and rebuild a relationship with his boys. The reason Mel chose to speak to PPRA is because he wants everyone to know that "having a m**h village built at Will Rogers State Beach would just be devastating."

Mel continues by saying "it would be absurd to bring them into the neighborhood because it would be unbelievably dangerous. These people are taking ownership of the sidewalks, they are violent, there is a gang element, it's extremely dangerous for the community. God forbid a kid in the neighborhood decides to do m**h once, next thing you know he's trying to quit but then he knows where to get more, it's so accessible, so easy to get, it's right down the street at Will Rogers State Beach - it's not a good idea."

Please DONATE to the PPRA Legal Fund to defend against homeless encampments at the beach. Go to: www.palisadesresidents.com

And send us an email if you want to be part of the real solution to the homeless crisis in LA.

Los Angeles is experiencing some of the worst times and for residents lawlessness is at its highest peak. PPRA created this video to help the community understand that we cannot afford to approve any more City programs that could jeopardize our safety any more than it already is.

Here is a quote from a resident of Venice to our Councilman. This resident approved a City program thinking he was being part of the solution and instead has suffered greatly. " I live across from the Venice Bridge Housing that you pushed as a solution for the unsheltered. You told the residents of Venice that ABH would be a safe “temporary” shelter that would identify and help transition ONLY those individuals living in encampments throughout Venice and that a special enforcement zone would be created that would stop any new encampments. As you well know, that special enforcement zone never happened and within days of opening the areas around ABH saw a huge increase in new encampments on Sunset Ave directly across from ABH as well as along Hampton Ave." The resident later describes that the rooms made available are often not used because the participants rather live on the streets than have to comply with the boundaries of the program.

In other districts of Los Angeles, this type of lawlessness is not necessarily happening. Our Councilman refuses to put measures in place to empower our law enforcement to properly protect residents from drug addicted and mentally ill dangerous street dwelling homeless members of our district.

Stay informed. Demand SAFETY for ALL. Let's unite for REAL humane and dignified solutions to homelessness.

Please donate to the 501c3 PPRA LEGAL FUND. We are an all volunteer organization and we need you support to defend against building homeless encampments at the beach.

Unity is Strength - Meet Steve Cron a PPRA Leader in our Community

Dear Neighbors,

For over 60 years Pacific Palisades Residents Association has worked to protect and preserve the neighborhoods and the coastal mountain environment of Pacific Palisades and surrounding areas as well as to educate its members, the community, and elected officials on issues that affect the environment and quality of life in Pacific Palisades and Los Angeles. PPRA has successfully fought the use of Santa Monica Bay for oil exploration and against oversize and ill-conceived development projects in Pacific Palisades. But who would have thought that the latest challenge to its neighborhoods and the environment comes from its own City Councilmember?

City Council Motion CF No. 21-0350, by Councilmember Mike Bonin and seconded by Councilmember Mark Ridley-Thomas, proposes to use the parking lot of Will Rogers State Beach, among other sites, for the construction of “micro-houses” and safe camping for an unknown number of the City’s homeless population. The land encompassing Will Rogers State Beach was a gift to the public from the Rogers family in 1948, and the State Beach is among Los Angeles’ major attractions. Because it is readily accessible by Interstate 10 and the Pacific Coast Highway, Will Rogers State Beach is used by families and residents from throughout the City as well as tourists from all around the world. Like parks and other beaches that are owned and/or operated by governmental entities, Will Rogers State Beach essentially is held in trust for the benefit of all citizens, not just those prescribed in the Motion.

Therefore, Pacific Palisades Residents Association opposes Motion CF No. 21-0350 and has retained Legal Counsel to defend against this motion.

Meet PPRA Board Director Steve Cron. Steve is currently the Representative of Palisades Highlands on the board of the Pacific Palisades Community Council as well as the President of the Palisades Democratic Club. Steve has volunteered to be the liaison between PPRA and our Legal Counsel.

Please help oppose this action. GO TO www.palisadesresidents.com DONATE to the cause and sign the petition.

WEST LA LAPD ASKED PPRA TO SHARE:
Hi PPRA, My name is Daniel Bral, I'm a 27-year-old born and raised Angeleno, the son of Iranian immigrants, and I'm running to serve as a Delegate to the California Democratic Party for Assembly District 50. If the past few years have shown us anything, it is that our apathy delegates the power to make life-altering decisions on our behalf to those who don’t empathize with our concerns. Being a Delegate means having a seat at the table. It’s a seat that allows us to be architects of California’s future. To do right by communities of color. To do right by people experiencing homelessness. To do right as global citizens. This seat will make space for all people, of all backgrounds. I made a commitment to public service when I went to work for the City of Los Angeles upon entering law school a few years ago. I will bring the same advocacy and moral clarity that I brought to City Hall – advocacy that led to the opening of a new homeless shelter, the passage of the right to counsel law, etc. – to the California Democratic Party to meaningfully address the homelessness crisis, systemic racism and inequality, climate change, gun violence, and promote a foreign policy that is centered on diplomacy and mutual respect and understanding that upholds democracy and human rights. That is why I’m running. To be a better advocate for those lacking a champion. I'm also excited to run alongside a group of thoughtful, dynamic leaders in the Grassroots Slate (grassrootsslate.com). We'd be honored to have your vote. If you are a registered Democrat residing in Assembly District 50 (check here: http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/), please register to vote in the Assembly Delegate election by going to grassrootsslate.com/vote. You'll receive a ballot in the mail early January, which must be returned by January 27th. Thank you so much, Daniel Bral
