There is a growing need for foster parents who are willing to open their homes to children and teens with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, and lower cognitive functioning. Sometimes potential foster parents worry, “Will I know what to do?” or “Am I equipped to meet their needs?” You don’t have to know everything before you begin.
At Omni Family of Services, we train and support our foster parents, including teaching trauma-informed approaches that can help you understand a child’s behaviors, build trust and felt safety, provide structure and consistency, and respond to each child’s individual needs. These children may need a little more patience, repetition, advocacy, understanding, and support, but most importantly, they need someone willing to see their potential and give them a safe place to grow.
Could your home be that place?
