Beautiful views of a picturesque waterfall, deep ravines, creeks and an expansive wooded area await you on your journey through this park. The Environmental Learning Center is located on nearly 200 acres of beautiful and ecologically diverse open space, rich in both cultural and natural history. Two Grand River tributaries, Big Creek and Jordan Creek, run through and are protected on this property
. Park hours: 6 am to 1/2-hour past sunset
The building at the Environmental Learning Center is open when staffed; hours may vary. With much local interest in park access, Lake Metroparks opened the parkland at the Environmental Learning Center for public access. Hikers will enjoy more than 2.5 miles of trails with a variety of trail surfaces including natural surfaces, in addition to our well manicured trails. The Environmental Learning Center is the only park in our system that connects with the Greenway Corridor, a 4.8-mile paved trail links the municipalities of Painesville, Painesville Township and Concord Township. The beautiful waterfall locally known as “Chair Factory Falls” is a natural feature accessible only by a 0.3-mile pedestrian trail off of the Greenway Corridor.

Spring peepers: A welcome sound of spring! (Turn the volume up!) Spring peepers are small tree frogs. Their bodies have smooth skin in shades of tan, brown, green, or gray, with lines that form an X-shaped pattern on their backs. Their bellies are white to cream-colored, and they have dark bands on their legs and a dark line between their eyes. They are well camouflaged to look like tree bark and have some ability to make themselves lighter or darker in order to better match their surroundings. National Wildlife Federation 📷 Martin McGuan

Making sure your hands are clean is crucial to help slow the spread of COVID-19. There are many ways that we clean our hands but, do they all work the same? Let’s find out by doing an experiment using fluorescent powder as germs on our hands. We will be using hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes and soap with water to clean our hands to see which method works best.

Who is one of the most adorable baby animals? Fawns of course. It’s hard not to fall in love with these beautiful babies if you find one. For your safety and the fawns, please make sure you love them from a safe distance. The more we hang around them or if we touch them, we are alerting predators to their location and keeping mom away. Please know the mom is nearby and will come to take care of her fawn but only when she knows it’s safe to do so. She only visits and feeds her baby a few times a day until it’s old enough to keep up with her. The fawn knows to lay still and quiet between visits. Wetlands play a crucial role in the natural world. Filtering out toxins from the environment, preventing flooding and providing habitat for countless animals and plants are just a few of them. Wetlands are threatened around the world. Ohio has lost 90% of its wetlands over the past 200 years. These natural habitats will never be truly replaced, so it is important that the ones remaining be preserved. Work is being done to rebuild some that have been lost. Explore a wetland in this video and see what lies within these natural wonders.
