Though the D15 election is uncontested this year, I urge everyone to get out to vote for all the other local contests.

There are quite a few candidates for the 3 open D211 board positions. I personally recommend voting for these 3 candidates that are independent from conflicting union money:

This is good summary of the progress that was made by the Boundary Task Force of D15 volunteers. They did a great job pulling all this information together for the BOE. The next step is for the Administration to take these concepts and put some firmer numbers together along with a more fleshed out plan for these 3-4 concepts.

The school district will vote this fall on whether to purchase property for a new elementary school.

It is great to see this agreement be tentatively reached and ready for a vote! Good work by both sides.

The District 15 Board of Education has reached a tentative contract agreement with the Service Employees International Union Local No. 73 (SEIU). The SEIU represents District 15's custodians, maintenance staff, warehouse staff and mechanics. The previous SEIU contract expired July 1, 2017.

The SEIU will meet on Monday, Dec. 11 to ratify the contract. More details about the contract will be released to the public later this week.

Dear District 15 Community:

At its Oct. 27 negotiation session, the Board of Education presented the Educational Support Personnel Association (ESPA) with its last, best contract offer. ESPA membership includes most secretaries, program assistants, nurses and sign language interpreters.

The Board of Education is waiting to hear from the ESPA leadership team regarding this proposal. We will inform the community of the union's decision as soon as we receive that information.

In the meantime, please review the details of the board's proposal below.

Today there have been many questions about the fact that health insurance coverage has stopped for striking ESPA members. This is because ESPA members were misled into thinking that they had 30 days before their health insurance would be stopped. This is one of the pieces of misinformation that was told to the ESPA members in order to get them to strike. The District sent a notice to the ESPA members on October 3rd outlining the true situation, almost 2 weeks prior to the strike, but obviously certain individuals told them to disregards that notice. Now unfortunately ESPA members have to deal with the consequences of their leadership's misinformation campaign.

There is much concern about the ESPA strike and so I feel I should shed some light on the situation. ESPA decided to break off negotiations with the BOE at 5:15 am after over 12 hours of negotiations. The BOE was working on a counter proposal, but ESPA declared that their last offer was all or nothing; clearly not the way to conduct negotiations. The BOE offered ESPA quite a lot at this last meeting, while they reciprocated with very little.

In retrospect looking at how this process has unfolded it has become clear that ESPA leadership has always wanted to strike. They have conducted themselves in such a manner from the very beginning. First they stalled meeting with the new board over the summer so that negotiation would happen during the school year. Then they refused to talk with the new board in the very first meeting and instead called for a federal mediator. Next they have spread falsehoods to their members and the public. They then incited their members to vote for a strike by telling them more misinformation about the negotiations, and misleading them with regards to what would happen if they strike. They told them they would not have to worry about health insurance for 30 days. This is false. They are now responsible to pay for their own health insurance through COBRA. They told them they would not lose pay because they would force the BOE to pay them for the missed hours in the final settlement. This is not something they should bank on. It is now clear that the plan was always to manufacture a crisis by striking. They figured that then they could use this crisis to bully the BOE into giving them whatever they want. They have repeatedly insisted in getting what the teachers received in their last contract. They asked for a 10 year contract, 24 sick days, budget exceeding raises, retirement incentives, etc.

I feel that the ESPA members provide a great service to the community and our children. It is truly sad that ESPA leadership has mislead them into striking. This new BOE was overwhelmingly elected to be good stewards of the taxpayers' money and to take all stakeholders interests into consideration when making decisions, not just a select few. A great measure of responsibility was entrusted to me and the new board when we were elected. I will not buckle under pressure because it is the easy thing to do. I will always stand for what is right and fair.

Hiring a new superintendent in 2019 is going to be a critical decision by the next school board. The superintendent drives the operations and future of the entire district, which is why it is so important. The superintendent is the only district employee hired by the school board. The school board should be looking for a candidate that has experience managing a large district such as District 15, which is the 3rd largest in the state with about 12,700 students. They must be an effective leader with the ability to work well with others in a collaborative manner. They will need to be a trusted liaison to the school board, informing them about the district’s operations and providing recommendations. Therefore, they need to be detail oriented and able to put together a strategic plan we can trust. School finances may fluctuate depending on many factors, so having the ability to adapt a budget from year to year and provide creative solutions is essential. They have to be qualified to implement continuous improvement in the curriculum to benefit our student’s education. Lastly, the new superintendent will need to understand and be capable of managing the district’s infrastructure to ensure that it is safe and well maintained for current and future students. This critical task of hiring a new superintendent will be the responsibility of the new school board, so it is especially important for voters to choose candidates that will do their due diligence and represent the community in making this decision. Our team of candidates is up for this task and will give it the intense commitment it deserves.

Part of being an effective board member is to visit all the schools in the district. Learning what is happening at the schools first hand is essential. I’m familiar with 3 of our D15 schools, Paddock, Marion Jordan, and Sundling Jr. High, since my children attend those. As a candidate I felt that it would be good to visit some of the schools which my children do not attend. So far I have visited 3 of the schools on the northeast side of the district and have found these visits to be very informative. These visits allowed me to see first had the environment in which the students are learning and an opportunity to speak with the principals and district administrators. I learned about many things during my visits including, but not limited to: how the schools are implementing the use of Chromebooks, current and upcoming curriculum changes, testing standards and methodologies, ESL programs, their lunch program, discipline policies, and teacher enrichment. The principals and district administrators were very forthcoming with information. It was nice to make a personal connection with the people directly responsible for educating our children. These visits have all been very fruitful experiences that I see them greatly benefiting my performance as a potential school board member. I look forward to visiting all our D15 schools in the near future.
