AHEPA History Spotlight: Feeding America During
The Great Depression (1930)

During the early years of the Great Depression, Greek-Americans and the Order of AHEPA stepped forward to help feed struggling families across the United States. In December 1930, The Ahepa
Magazine reported that Ahepans and Greek-owned restaurants were helping provide free meals for an estimated 15,000 needy people each day. These meals were offered “irrespective of nationality,” reflecting the community’s commitment to serving all Americans during a time of widespread hardship.

Across the country, AHEPA chapters organized substantial relief efforts:

• Kalamazoo, Michigan: Ahepans donated 5,000 meals through the local Civic League.

• South Bend, Indiana: Members provided 77 meals daily for at least 60 days to the hungry.

• Chicago, Illinois: Ten AHEPA chapters launched the “Chicago United Greek Charities,” aiming to raise $100,000 for families in need.

• Cincinnati, Ohio: Chapters collected clothing and funds to support municipal welfare services.

These remarkable acts of service demonstrated the deep gratitude that Greek immigrants felt toward the United States and affirmed AHEPA’s mission of philanthropy, civic responsibility, and community leadership. In one of America’s darkest economic chapters, the Greek-American community did more than endure—they helped feed the nation.

AHEPA Chapter 528 shared an evening of fellowship and philotimo during its annual Thanksgiving supper, strengthening the bonds of brotherhood. Although the restaurant had already put up its Christmas decorations, the warmth of the gathering—and the spirit of the season—made it the perfect backdrop for our Thanksgiving celebration.
