This piece ran in Sunday's New York Times and our CA elected officials were quick to denounce it (THANK YOU Xavier Becerra, Alex Padilla, Congressman Jared Huffman, Senator Adam Schiff, Attorney General Rob Bonta, Governor Gavin Newsom). We have our own story playing out right here in Palm Springs - the Tahquitz Wildlife Corridor (adjacent to the North Lykken Trailhead) is up for sale. Fortunately, our community has banded together to show the importance of keeping this land free from development. One developer dropped out of escrow (a temporary reprieve!) and now we are working diligently with Oswit Land Trust to buy and preserve these critical 22 acres. One of our neighbors caught our federally protected Big Horn ewes, rams and lambs taking refuge in the Tahquitz Wildlife Corridor. We are continuing our work to save their habitat!

WE HAVE NEWS!

We started this group 10 months ago, when we learned 22 acres of formerly preserved land was under contract with an Orange County developer. When we saw his proposal to build 98 units right through the middle of this fragile animal habitat, we swung into action. We raised money, hired land-use lawyers and consultants, and sent our findings to the City.

Our goals were clear: first, stop the proposed development from happening. Second, buy the land and preserve it forever.

WE ARE THRILLED TO TELL YOU OUR FIRST GOAL HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED: THE DEVELOPER HAS OFFICIALLY DROPPED OUT OF ESCROW!!

Of course we'll never know why. Did he finally realize this is a landlocked site with no easy access to water or sewer lines? Did City Planning's multi-page, red-lined response to his application give him pause? Or was it our passionate and collaborative community activism? No matter - we met our first objective.

Now we're on to our second goal. The land is back on the market which means we have a chance to buy and preserve it. We are working diligently to make that happen (timing is key - we can't let another developer swoop in). We'll be back to you with information and updates as we learn more.

It's getting so hot and we know so many are leaving for cooler climates. But we want you to know that our work to save the Tahquitz Wildlife Corridor from development will continue without pause all summer (ICYMI, an Orange County Developer has an application in to City Planning to build 98 units on 22 unspoiled acres, right at the base of the N Lykken Trailhead - we are working mightily to not let that happen.)

We also wanted to recap the work we've done so far:

- Our land-use lawyer sent detailed letters to City Planning citing 13 pages of reasons why the developer must be required to complete an Environmental Impact Report (which we believe would identify the myriad of reasons this proposal cannot go forward). And in a separate letter, she detailed the findings of the Noise and Traffic study we commissioned (summary: far too much noise, dangerous levels of traffic.) More reports from consultants will follow.

- We held our first house-party to raise funds for our legal effort - such a success! There will be another in the fall. DM us if you'd like your name added to our invitation list

- The local press took notice! We had two lead stories on TV news and front page stories in the Desert Sun and Palm Springs Post

An Orange County businessman currently has an application in City Planning to build 98 units on the Tahquitz Wildlife Corridor, right at the base of the N. Lykken Trail. Christopher Kennedy and David Clark are renovating their beautiful new home nearby (the Macnaughton house - stunning!) and installed this billboard on the corner of their lot to support our efforts. We are so grateful!

On Thursday afternoon, we hosted our first house party to save the Tahquitz Wildlife Corridor from development (ICYMI, an Orange County developer with a questionable reputation has an application into the City to build 98 units right in the middle of a wildlife corridor, adjacent to the N. Lykken Trailhead). Christopher Kennedy and David Clark opened up their spectacular new home for us, and 80 passionate community members showed up to support the effort. We had food from the fabulous Chef Tanya, speeches from Kirk Ballard and Elizabeth Matzner (they've been deep into this since the FOR SALE sign went up on this fragile desert land), and David Paisley from Oswit Land Trust on hand to collect donations for our legal fund. It was a great success!

One of the greatest things about living here is the how involved our community gets when a need arises. A group of neighbors is working mightily to keep the Tahquitz Wildlife Corridor free from development (an Orange County businessman wants to build 98 units right through the middle of a wildlife corridor, next to the N. Lykken trailhead). We posted an alert about this on NextDoor and Chef Tanya stepped right up. Now this flyer is on every single to-go order leaving the fabulous Chef Tanya's Kitchen Vegan Restaurant.
