Four Chaplains Day is observed each year on February 3 to honor the extraordinary heroism and selflessness of four U.S. Army chaplains during World War II.

On February 3, 1943, the troop ship USAT Dorchester was torpedoed by a German submarine in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. As the ship began to sink, Lieutenant George L. Fox (Methodist), Lieutenant Alexander D. Goode (Jewish), Lieutenant John P. Washington (Catholic), and Lieutenant Clark V. Poling (Reformed) moved among the soldiers, calming fears, offering prayers, and guiding men to lifeboats.

When life jackets ran out, the chaplains removed their own and gave them to others. Survivors later recalled seeing the four standing together on the deck, arms linked, praying and singing as the ship went down.
