Sergeant Colin Ismail Arslanbas, a Reconnaissance Marine with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, lost his life during a nighttime High-Altitude High-Opening (HAHO) parachute training exercise near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was 23 years old — promoted to the rank of Sergeant just 17 days before the accident, and was preparing for an upcoming overseas deployment when the parachute mishap claimed his life.

Assigned to the elite Maritime Special Purpose Force (MSPF), Arslanbas had earned some of the most demanding qualifications the Corps offers — Army Airborne School, Military Free-fall School, and SERE School — achievements that speak to a young man who relentlessly pushed himself toward excellence. He enlisted in March 2020, and in less than four years had built a record that most servicemembers spend a career pursuing.

What makes his story particularly poignant is what he was carrying beyond his mission gear: his wife Gracen was expecting their first daughter at the time of the accident. A husband, a father-to-be, a Sergeant — all within the span of one extraordinary and too-brief life. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation honored his family, ensuring his sacrifice was not forgotten.

We honor Sergeant Colin Ismail Arslanbas — the Marine who chose the hardest path, gave everything he had in service of his country, and left behind a family, a daughter who will know her father through the stories of those who served beside him.

Leadership is easy to talk about when everything is going according to plan.

It reveals itself when it isn't.

On March 20, 2005, Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester and her Kentucky Army National Guard military police squad were escorting a convoy near Baghdad when they came under a fierce enemy ambush.

Under heavy fire, Hester and her squad leader moved toward the threat, leading a counterattack and assaulting an enemy trench line.

Her actions earned her the Silver Star making Hester the first woman in U.S. Army history to receive the award for direct combat action against an enemy force.

But there's another part of her story that I think every leader should hear.

When people focused on *her* heroism, Hester focused on her team

She made it clear that what happened that day wasn't the accomplishment of one individual. They survived and succeeded because they trusted one another, relied on their training and worked as a team.

That's leadership.

It isn't always about being the loudest voice in the room or having the title beside your name.

Sometimes leadership means being prepared when the moment comes.

Sometimes it means stepping forward first.

And sometimes it means accomplishing something extraordinary and still remembering the people who stood beside you.

MILITARY MONDAY | LEADERSHIP WHEN IT MATTERS MOST

Every Monday, I share the story of an American service member whose courage deserves to be remembered.

Today, that name is Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler, U.S. Army Special Operations.

On October 22, 2015, Wheeler was part of a Special Operations mission near Hawijah, Iraq, to rescue hostages being held by ISIS and facing imminent ex*****on.

When the mission erupted into an intense firefight, Wheeler moved toward the danger.

Seventy-five hostages were ultimately rescued.

Master Sgt. Wheeler was killed in action.

His career included 17 combat deployments five with the 75th Ranger Regiment and 12 with Army Special Operations Command. He earned 11 Bronze Star Medals, four with Valor among numerous other decorations.

Those numbers tell us something about the soldier.

But what happened afterward tells us something about the man.

Sgt. Maj. Thomas “Patrick” Payne, who fought alongside Wheeler during that rescue mission and later received the Medal of Honor, named his son Josh in Wheeler's honor.

Think about the kind of impact a person must have for someone to carry their name into the next generation.

That's leadership.

Not the title on your business card.
Not the recognition.
Not being the loudest person in the room.

Leadership is what you do when other people are counting on you.

It's stepping forward when stepping back would be easier.

It's serving when nobody is watching.

And it's leaving people better because you were there.

Today, I hope you'll take a moment to remember the name:

Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler. 🇺🇸

To his family, his fellow service members, our veterans, and every military family that understands the true cost of service — thank you.

His life mattered.
His sacrifice mattered.
And his name deserves to be remembered.
