Frozen pipes can be an unwelcome occurrence when Central Illinois experiences extremely cold temperatures and wind chills such as those forecast for this weekend. Frozen water pipes can result in an inconvenient disruption of water service and possibly burst pipes.

The Marquette Heights Public Works Department recommends leaving a small stream of water, about the size of a pencil lead, running in a faucet on bitterly cold days and nights. This is especially important for those whose water pipes have previously frozen. A pencil lead-size stream of water running for 12 hours costs only a few cents but can prevent a plumbing bill costing hundreds of dollars.

Other tips for prevention of frozen pipes include sealing openings to crawl spaces and unheated basements; allowing some heat into unheated basements where pipes are subject to freezing; and opening sink cabinet doors on outside walls to allow heat to reach pipes.

If pipes do freeze, the Public Works Department will check to see if the problem is in the city’s piping or the homeowner’s pipes.

Those who are leaving their homes for an extended period, such as a vacation, should call the city’s water billing department at 382-3455 and ask to have the service temporarily shut off.

~ TIPS TO PREVENT FREEZING PIPES ~

BEFORE COLD WEATHER HITS
• Know the location of your water shut-off valve and test it regularly.
If a pipe breaks, you won't want to have to find it then or, worse, wait for someone to arrive at your place to find it for you. In most single-family homes, the shut-off valve is in the basement or the crawl space, on a wall facing the street.
• Turn off outdoor faucets and be sure to disconnect hoses from them.
Make sure the faucet and the outside portion of the pipes are fully drained. A valve inside many houses will shut off the water's flow; then open and close the tap outside to release any water in the pipe. Disconnect the hose to ensure that freeze-proof faucets will drain and to avoid damage to the hose from freezing water.
• Winterize unheated or vacant buildings.
Significant property damage and water loss can occur before burst pipes are discovered in vacant buildings. If your vacant building has a fire protection system, make sure there is no danger that the water servicing this system might freeze.
• Insulate water pipes that may be vulnerable to the cold or have caused problems before.
Pipes close to exterior walls or in unheated basements can be wrapped with pieces of insulation. Don't overlook pipes near windows, which can quickly freeze. For particularly difficult pipes, consult a professional on how to select and apply heat tape. Caution: Improper use of heat tape can cause fires. Never put heat tape on the water meter to avoid damaging plastic components of the meter.
DURING FREEZING WEATHER
• Keep open cabinet doors leading to exposed pipes (such as access doors for sinks), so that household air can warm them.
The natural flow of warmer air will help combat many problems.
• If you have an attached garage, keep its doors shut.
Occasionally, plumbing is routed through this unheated space, leaving it vulnerable to winter's worst.
• Crack a faucet farthest from the place where your water enters the house.
A very slow drip will keep water molecules moving, reducing the chance that pipes will freeze. Place a bucket underneath the faucet so the water can be saved for other household uses.
Keep your thermostat set above 65 degrees when leaving your house or business for several days

Postpone unnecessary road travel this Thursday and Friday as heavy snow, bitter cold and gusty winds are headed our way creating hazardous road conditions.

If you must drive because of an emergency, reduce your speed, increase your following distance and stay vigilant.

Remember to SLOW DOWN and MOVE OVER for ANY vehicle on the side of the roadway with emergency or hazard lights activated.

12/22/2022

There is a pretty high probability (60-80%) that most will see at least 2" of snow Thu-Thu night. Chances of receiving closer to 4" is much lower (20-30%), but will still possible where heavier bands may set up. Be sure to plan ahead & keep up on the latest forecast.

Last Friday Chief Merritt went to Belleville to attend Officer Coryell's graduation from SWIC police academy. Officer Coryell attended 560 hours of education to become a full-time certified officer. They took their test the morning of graduation and we got the notice today that he did, in fact, pass the exam! (We had faith he would pass, but didn't want to take the chance of jinxing it either!) So, please welcome Officer Coryell to our department!
