American Legion Pelham Post 50

On the evening of Tuesday October 6th at Village Hall, we along with several of our town officials were proud to honor Pelham 12th Graders Finnegan Mullen for his accomplishments at Boys State and Boys Nation and Arya Gauba for her accomplishments at American Legion Auxiliary Girls State this past summer. Boys State and Girls State are two amazing American Legion sponsored youth programs focused on leadership and civic responsibility. Eligible participants are students who have completed their Junior Year of High School. The programs are one week long. Looking ahead to next year, Pelham Post 50 will be interviewing prospective candidates for these programs starting next month through January (Applications are due in February and March). On September 11th, 2026, our town and villages came together to pay their annual tribute to the Pelham and Pelham Manor residents who lost their lives in the tragic events 25 years ago to the date. Our American Legion Post 50’s Past Commander and former Village of Pelham Mayor, Joe Durnin eloquently presided over the event as he has done for each of the past years. We were honored to be joined by so many members of the Pelham and Pelham Manor police departments, local and county officials, Pelham Memorial High School and Pelham Middle students and especially Nancy Shea and Sheila Scandole who are the surviving spouses of Pelham Manor 9/11 victims Robert Scandole and Joseph Shea. A special thank you to Jeanine Lamanna who sang our national anthem as well as to the Pelham Larks, who closed the ceremony with their rendition of God Bless America. And thank you to the so many of you who turned out that day in support.!

All residents are invited to attend a commemoration ceremony honoring the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 am at the Town of Pelham 9/11 Memorial, located at Harmon Avenue and Harmon Place near the Pelham train station. We are saddened to share that past Post 50 Commander and Chaplain, Frank Barbieri, USAF, entered the Chapter Eternal on August 13. Our prayers are with his wife, family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Please join us in celebrating Frank’s life at Pelham Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 18, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m as we remember his dedicated service, friendship and commitment to the Pelham community. Post 50 will conduct a ceremony in his honor at 7:30 p.m.

MEMORIAL DAY 2026: In spite of our cancelled parade due to the weather, Pelham had another meaningful Memorial Day tribute to honor our nation’s fallen. As per tradition, the names of each of Pelham’s war dead were read aloud. Relatives of the members of the service members who lost their lives in Vietnam were present to read their loved ones’ names directly.
On behalf of American Legion Post 50, thank you to everyone who collaborated on this event. Thank you especially to the Pelham Larks, the Pelham Memorial High School Band members under the direction of Andrew Van Bochove, Reverend Matthew Mead from Christ the Redeemer Church, the Pelham Scouts, Michael Bohn for your reading of In Flanders Field, Todd Cross for the photography, the student Glover Brigade Reenactors under the direction of Pelham Middle School teacher David Accocella and each of the Town, Village, County and State officials who joined us that day. Congratulations and thank you to our outstanding Grand Marshall Dan McLaughlin and our absolutely terrific and insightful keynote speaker Arthur Scinta. Last but not least, thank you to the incomparable Joe Durnin who has been leading this ceremony since the 1980s.!

On behalf of American Legion Pelham Post 50, I would like to express my gratitude to each one of you who donated to the fundraising drive which was conducted for the Veterans Food Pantry at the Bronx VA Medical Center. This past Wednesday, I accompanied the four outstanding Pelham Middle School Eighth Grade Students, Liam Mcdermott, Brooks Horten, Luca Treves and Gavin Bower who led this fundraising drive to drop off the collected items at the hospital. The students coordinated efforts with Pelham’s own American Legion Post 50 to facilitate a contribution of approximately $3,000.00 in combined cash, clothing and non-perishable food items.

Food and Clothing Drive for Veterans This Weekend and Next at Gazebo Park
Please come by Pelham’s Gazebo Park this weekend where American Legion Post 50 members and Pelham Middle School students will be collecting food and clothing items to supply the Bronx Veterans Medical Center’s food pantry. The Veterans Hospital Food Pantry services veterans struggling with food insecurity and homelessness. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to the hospital, please make your check payable to James J Peters VA Medical Center. We can also accept gift card donations. We will be delivering the donations to the Veterans Hospital during the week of May 11th. For drop-offs outside of the collection times, please DM Phillip Kiamie.
