Reagan's Address to the Nation

Our first meeting today was a great kick-off for our new lunchtime format with three visitors and now we have a brand new Soaring Eagle, welcome Jeff! I gave a speech from the Interpretive Reading manual, The Oratorical Speech, and because today marks the 34th anniversary of the Challenger disaster I chose President Reagan's address to the nation. I am attaching a link to the speech, it is a great example of a rhetorical speech that changes to fit each sub-audience, the families of the crew, NASA and the scientific community, and all of the school children that watched that day (50% of children ages 9-13 were watching the lift-off when it exploded). He speaks with the tone of a eulogist, a friend, a father, a politician and a leader.
See you at our next meeting!

Ladies and gentlemen, I'd planned to speak to you tonight to report on the state of the Union, but the events of earlier today have led me to change those plans. Today is a day for mourning and remembering.

The Soaring Eagles Toastmasters will have our first noontime meeting at the Perryville Public library on Tuesday, 12pm, January 28, 2020. Hope you are able to come. Bring a friend and share the benefits of Toastmasters.

Dear Toastmasters and Friends, With sadness we share the passing of one of Soaring Eagles founding members, Wilford Verill, on June 3, 2020. After a long illness, Wilford is at rest. He will be missed. Condolences to the family.
Good Afternoon and Happy Thanksgiving Soaring Eagles, fellow Toastmasters, and Guests! We had a great meeting on November 21st with 6 members and 1 guest. Franklin Howell visited us from the BGE club. He is a new Toastmaster looking for more growth oppotunities. Welcome, Franklin! My favorite aspect of the meeting was the Toastmaster of the Evening, Deb, and Table Topics Master, Melissa, conducted the meeting enthusiastically and professionally with excellent stage presence and introductions. Also, they brought delicious snacks for a 10 minute intermission and networking session! We'd like to keep the snacking networking session going. Please consider bring a snack to share for the next meeting. It does not have to be anything fancy, just enough for 5 or so people to munch while we get to know eachother a little better. At the meeting, we had one prepared speech from me. I conducted an Educational Session for Finding New Members and Keeping Them, where we talked about how to bring guests to the club with personal conversations about goals, benefits, and growth, then how to keep those guests and turn them to commited members through developing personal bonds and friendships. The speech combined two Advanced Series Modules from the Successful Club Series: Finding New Members and Keeping the Commitment. Janis Peters gave a spectacular evaluation of the speech using the sandwich method with praise for the strengths of the speech, then feedback on how to improve the speech, wrapping up with a brief, yet encouraging conclusion. Table Topics Master, Melissa Smith went around the room for participatants with some great topics for each. Regina Webster kicked it off talking about needing some fun and returning to the Soaring Eagles after a hiatus. Thomas Gray wanted us to give him some time. Our guest, Franklin, explained why he joined Toastmasters to practice and improve his public speaking abilities. Janis's favorite thing about Thanksgiving is how life stops for family, giving time to yourself and others, and giving thanks. Deb Hennig talked about how something old can be something new while suggesting using an old recruitment technique of postcards to help grow our club. Lastly, I wrapped up Table Topics talking about getting together with family and connecting with them during the holiday season. I hope everyone enjoyed my write up for the meeting and is jazzed to attend our next one on December 5th! See below for assigned meeting roles and visit the website or reply to sign up for the open spots. Happy Thanksgiving and see you on December 5th! Nick
