Democrats and republicans in congress stole taxpayer donations for grassroots Presidential campaigns to fund the Secret Service and now won't pay us. They did this quietly with the $1.2 trillion bill to avoid government shutdown.

When you do your taxes, you can check a box to donate $3 for the Presidential Matching Fund. To help grassroots political movements, congress has a Presidential Matching Fund to allow tax payers to opt into matching the donations that Presidential candidates receive. The two major parties however never use these funds for the general election because they would rather spend billions.

There is a max candidate spending limit for qualifying for matched funds of $123 million. So the fund has grown to over $400 million before they took $320 million to pay the secret service. $25 million to pay the justice department. $55 million for "election security". Today there is $17 million left in the fund. My preferred candidate Jill Stein is the only candidate besides Mike Pence to qualify. She is owed $270,000.

Their argument is that there is a budget shortage for the primary. They are waiting to see if any candidates make a request following the result of the primary because Major Party candidates can request these funds for the party. But third party candidates cannot because our primary isn't recognized. The general election matched funds take priority over primary matched.

If you checked the $3 box, you should be upset right now.

This Tuesday, May 14th, at 11:30 am, over 150 of our elders living at the Brith Shalom House in Wynnefield will be gathering at City Hall demanding their rights to safe and adequate housing. The Brith Shalom Winit LP has left their entire 2nd floor not safe for human habitation with exposed wires and leaking sewage. This winter their apartments were frigid. Utility companies are threatening to turn off their utilities. What if this was your mother?! The call to action is gather in community support for our elders!

The Green Party supports housing for all. That includes safe and accommodating housing for our elders to ensure their basic subsistence is met. Our 150 elders at the Brith Shalom Tenants Union deserve to live with heat and electricity. But now these elders are without the ability to get a medical extension from their utility providers. They are demanding the City Fund L&I to make repairs, Philadelphia Housing Authority purchase the property. Our leaders must take every action to make sure they have safe housing!

Let's gather at city hall and show support to our elders at the Brith Shalom House that morning. Many of these elders have mobility limitations that prevent a lot of people from normally participating in protests and organizing. Let's make sure they know their efforts for safe housing advocacy are celebrated by Philadelphia greens!
