With 399 days until 2024 Election Day, I call it like I see it.
Whether you love or hate him, Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee in ‘24 but won’t make it through the general election.
Back at Wharton today.
Last week we had a fire alarm during so we adapted and took the class outside and held it at Locust Walk - one of my favorite sports at Penn - & I’m really proud of this class.
The Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle taught practical philosophy nearly 2500 years ago: including how to use the three appeals of persuasive communication: Ethos (trust), Logos (logic) & Pathos (passion).
As future business leaders, you can’t outsource communicating to your teammates, investors or clients.

Having an ‘Attitude of Gratitude’ makes my heart smile. Got this unexpected note from my friend, Carlton Shelly II - a 2013 West Point grad who went on to become a US Chamber Hiring Our Heroes Fellow Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania grad and is now a VP at Bank of America. From this great Army Veteran:
“We took this picture 6 years ago today while I was doing hiring our heroes in Colorado Springs.
I just want to say thank you.
Much has changed since that day, marriage, child, Wharton, Investment banking, and starting at a top consulting firm. I had a successful transition largely because of that program.
Thank you & Stay Strong”
This made my day! I’ve been working on helping transitioning Veterans since the day I came home from Iraq 20 years ago. If you’re transitioning, many of us are here to help.

Last week, we honored as a nation, our American troops who were captured and are missing in action.
There are countless service members who have sacrificed everything to protect this nation and our freedoms.
Today, I still want to honor those who gave their all and those who bear the scars of war. One day is not merely enough to remember those who are missing and we’re captured.
Thank you for all you have done.
What an incredible day honoring this All American Paratrooper after 20+ years of service to our nation
An absolute honor & privledge getting the team back together to drive to the Pentagon to honor this All American after 20+ years of incredible service to our nation - congrats CW3 Juan Santiago for always leading from the front, being a friend, & continuing the legacy of your family’s service. Can’t believe 20 years ago we were in Baghdad together (you were a Private First Class) and your incredible growth & distinguished career since those defining moments - including your multiple deployments after our time together back to Iraq, Afghanistan & GITMO. Loved seeing you, most of the team, your family & colleagues, & was touched by your remarks about how your Dad Julio (a career Army Soldier) is your hero, and jow your brothers, three sons, Mom, fiancé, & all of us who were lucky to serve with you keep you strong. You have been & will continue to be the ‘Keeper of the Flame’ & your genuinely humble story of those who had your back when you came up a little short was authentic & inspiring because we don’t have a ‘zero-defect’ Army (the leader who said to you: ‘We’re glad you found your way back to us.’) Loved your Maya Angelo quote about how people will remember how you made them feel. You always made us on the team feel special bc you always, always had our back. When I think of you, I’m reminded of General Patron’s famous quote on leadership: “Loyalty from the top down is even more necessary and much less prevalent.” Keep crushing life my friend. We love you! 💪 🇺🇸
Happy New Year to all my friends of the Jewish faith.
Tonight begins Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish new year and the first of the High Holidays or ”Days of Awe.”
Yom Kippur is ten days later with Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah is a two-day festival marking the anniversary of human creation—and the special relationship between humans and God.
The bedrock of American Democracy is our US Constitution which ensures that NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.
Not the President’s son or the former President himself.
As a former federal & military prosecutor, I’m tired of politicians questioning the integrity of our law enforcement professionals.
Like my Dad, law enforcement leave the house never knowing if they’ll be back home.
I won’t stand idly by when folks try to disparage our FBI or local police. Check out our clip & let me know what you think:
"Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty, and persistence." - Colin Powell
Success doesn't come overnight - it takes hard work and perseverance. You will never see results overnight.
Some success won't be seen for years and others may be acquired in a few months.
The most successful people in this world did not sit and wait for an opportunity to come to them, but they went out and grabbed it for themselves.
You have that power, the biggest thing holding you back, is yourself.

Military spouses are expected to sacrifice much of their freedoms to help support our troops and raise our military children.
One of those sacrifices often comes in the form of job security.
With constant moves, almost as often as every 2 -3 years, it can be difficult to settle in and bolster one’s career.
Task Force Movement & Hiring Our Heroes are working hard to help support military spouses by helping them connect with positions in healthcare.
Emily Haas , senior advisor for TFM shares the unique environment 2020’s pandemic created - “It’s an unfortunate perfect storm, of need versus a shortage in workforce,” she added. “So, we see an opportunity for personnel with skills coming out of the military, and for military spouses that have the skills and education but just don’t have the support or pathways right now.”

Friends - you know I call it how it is & will always put our country first.
Was on The Faulkner Focus Fox today to discuss how the Russian Invasion dramatically drove up gas prices to over $5/gallon ($200 billion in oil company profits last year too but I digress) - we need to do more to bring gas prices down for American families - but I had to correct the record on how we are actually opening up more oil leases (Willow Project), fracking, investing in green energy & better conserving the energy we do use - an ‘All of the Above’ approach.
Hope you can give it a listen & share with people who want to hear the truth & not just talking points from the far right & far left.
Please make time stop. Can’t believe it’s 11th grade for Maggie and 8th for Jack.
These two humans are beautiful inside and out and it makes me a little sad tbh at how fast time is flying by. We are so, so blessed.
It's still hot outside, but you can feel the change on its way. As we go into fall, many will focus on the closing out of the year strong.
I'm choosing to focus on how to start fresh: New school year for me and my kids, a new season hopefully chasing this heat away soon, and a new time of reflection as we're rounding out the year to finish strong.
What is something new you're starting this fall? Let me know in the comments below.
Let us never forget that 60 years ago today, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. courageously stood arm in arm with fellow Americans and marched to Washington D.C. to take a stand against oppression and hatred - and more importantly, for the equality of all Americans, including Black Americans.
Separate but equal was anything but, and we as a country were forced to look inwardly at the mistreatment of millions of Americans.
We're still not perfect and there are still too many injustices, but it is up to us to make a difference day in and day out to make our communities and country better in order live up to our duty spelled our in the US Constitution’s preamble, ‘in Order to form a more perfect Union.” Kennedy Democrats
My heart goes out to WWII Navy Bob Barker’s family on his passing. I had the honor of meeting him as a contestant on back in 1998 when I was an Army Lieutenant. He was incredibly gracious and a good man. Loved him.
Steve Kornacki looks back at the time MSNBC “Taking the Hill” host and Former Rep. Patrick Murphy was on “The Price is Right.”
Was proud to talk about on Outnumbered Fox News .
Social media is a powerful tool that brings people together but can also make others more isolated. It requires constant balance - especially when it comes to your kids.
It's important to be engaged on what your kids are consuming and retaining.
As someone who believes in a limited government, I’m alarmed that four states are trying to ban young Americans on social media, and even more alarmed at parents who are trying to grab followers on their own accounts by embarrassing their own kids (slapping them with cheese ).
Psychiatrist told Newsweek that embarrassing your children online can negatively impact their mental health.

The sacred duty & primary purpose of our government is to keep our families safe.
We the People want to know you truly care about them and their families, not just your agendas.
There are some fantastic leaders like Philly Mayor-elect Councilwoman Cherelle L. Parker, Josh Shapiro, & Wes Moore who are stepping up the plate and being straightforward with the American people, even if it’s not popular.
This is how we make progress and move forward - electing people who are truly in it for the good of the people.

People are going “nocturnal” to avoid the heat this summer. Well, 20 years ago it was 138 degrees in Baghdad, Iraq and we’d be in full ‘Battle Rattle.’
But I must be getting soft bc last week I was in San Antonio, Texas with the US Chamber Foundation & Hiring Our Heroes and ran early in the morning in the heat.
By 4pm at a meeting, I was pounding black coffee to keep awake. The heat definitely takes a toll.
All of that said, the good news is, well, good. Murder is down 13 percent in New York City, and shootings are down 25 percent, relative to last year as of late May. Murder is down more than 20 percent in Los Angeles, Houston, and Philadelphia.
And, most significantly, murder is down 30 percent—30 percent!—or more in Jackson, Mississippi; Atlanta, Georgia; Little Rock, Arkansas; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and others.
https://bit.ly/3Ox16S6
The good news comes with the caveat that murder is not uniformly falling everywhere. Memphis, for example, has experienced an uptick following the killing of Tyre Nichols in January.
Additionally, even a record double-digit percent decline in murder in 2023 would still mean that a couple thousand more people will be murdered in America this year than in 2019.
Finally, mass shootings are on the rise even as overall gun violence appears to be falling.
Multiple sources point to falling murder and gun violence in the U.S., but mass shootings are not following the same trend.
Murder is down about 12 percent year-to-date in more than 90 cities that have released data for 2023, compared with data as of the same date in 2022.
Big cities tend to slightly amplify the national trend—a 5 percent decline in murder rates in big cities would likely translate to a smaller decline nationally.
But even so, the drop shown in the preliminary data is astonishing.

It’s always an honor to be with genuine Leaders of Character, who lead our nation’s best young men and women during these defining times.
What advice would you give them?

We must hold those in charge accountable for the their illegal actions. Give them their day in court but do NOT continue to look the other way.
Too often in America justice is thwarted by political power or financial might - we must right this wrong.
The American people deserve to be protected by bad actors who do wrong both at home and abroad…& that includes keeping accountable those who illegally abuse their power without a care for those they supposedly serve.
“These are the facts, Ron Desantis is 37 points down and cannot overcome the toxic trance that Donald Trump has over the Republican Party.”
We need leaders who will unify our nation, not to continue ripping us apart from the inside with political and divisive acts.
Excited to join Drexel Hamilton as Chairman of the Advisory Board.

There’s a bi-partisan effort to counter China's Communist regime and their technological and physical actions against the world (and ourselves).
We need to be vigilant now more than ever - America needs to come together and be on the same page for our people, not personal political agendas. If we wish to create a safe home for our children, we need to take action now.

There’s nothing more rewarding than watching your kids succeed. I’ve been blessed with two strong athletes - & even better, both of my kids love what they do.
It’s important you support your kids in all extracurriculars: whether that’s dance, volleyball, basketball, or even a hobby - be there for them and meet them where they are.
Some of my favorite conversations was the drive to/from practice or a game.
Makes me a little sad that Maggie now drives herself 😞

Life moves quickly. You either sit and worry about how fast it’s going, or you strap in and take control of you’re going to do with the time you’ve been gifted. It’s all in your hands. You gotta make it count every minute of every day!
“…the attackers used a stolen or forged Microsoft signing key of the kind that the company uses to authenticate customers. With that key, they could masquerade as any Microsoft Exchange or Outlook email customer and approve access to employee inboxes.”
Our adversaries are too advanced for us not to be prepared for any and all cyberattacks. This deliberate back door attack by China to steal personal information from our US Ambassador to China is abominable. We need to defend the American government & our people from cyberattacks and we can be sure more are to come. It’s time to wake up!
The hack, disclosed a week ago, alarmed officials because the attackers used a stolen or forged Microsoft signing key that the company uses to authenticate customers.

Summer can actually be hard to get motivated because of the oppressive heat - but you gotta use that obstacle as a challenge to push through.
We’re over halfway through the year but you still got this - Remember the Performance Triad: 1) Eat Right (limit processed foods, lots of water & protein); 2) Sleep Right (8 hours allows your body to recover); & 3) Exercise Every Day (5x/week for 20-30 mins, preferably resistance/weight training, but walk/stretch every day to keep your body moving).

A big shoutout to all teachers today for #WorldTeachersDay. We don’t deserve all the work you do to empower and raise up future generations. Every time I get to teach The Wharton School, it’s an honor and privilege to learn from my students as much as I hope they learn from me.

Twenty-five years ago this weekend, I had the honor of introducing President Bill Clinton when he came to speak at my alma mater, King's College, Pennsylvania. Igor Bobić captured this video yesterday of Trump rioters tearing down American flags at the capitol and putting their own flags up instead.
