As New York City enters a new legislative cycle with a new Speaker-designate at the helm, one crisis continues to grow, largely unacknowledged: the City’s systemic failure to protect veterans in transitional housing. At the center of this crisis is the Borden Avenue Veterans Residence (BAVR)—the only VA-funded Grant & Per Diem (GPD) site in NYC—where federal policy is being violated and veterans are being retraumatized rather than restored.

Veterans Justice Project, LLC is a for-profit organization that assists the Justice-Involved and Incarcerated Veteran with resources and services for financial security, housing services, legal evaluation, VA claims and benefits, and more. VJP does not charge Veterans that cannot pay for services.

Special thanks to WestCOP SSVF for always stepping up to serve the veterans throughout the Hudson Valley Region. This Veteran was a collaborative effort between us, Montrose VA, and Bobby Lu's Movers.

It was a beautiful day for our veteran to start over. He moved directly into his new home from the Montrose VA. It always makes me feel so happy to hear how much each Veteran loves the selection of surplus we send. The majority of our deliveries are items unseen until move. We always make sure things look beautiful. ❤️

Our crew made an emergency trip to Peekskill this morning after we received a request from a previous served veteran working with Vet2Vet in Westchester. Today's veteran came home after a long hospitalization to find her sofa had mold damage. We offered to furnish more. She declined due to the need for space for her medical equipment.

A Tale of Two Transitional Programs

Meals and Food Donations / MANA House
Nutritional meals are a vital part of the transitional program. Veterans that are not getting fed tend to drink more alcohol which fills them up and provides a buzz at the same time. Donations and meals from church groups, veteran’s organizations, and leftovers from concerts are all accepted and made available in the community refrigerator. Each team also has a refrigerator for personal food items and the cupboards are always full of canned goods. An on-site chef prepares nutritious meals daily.

Meals and Food Donations / Borden Avenue
Community groups are not allowed in Borden Avenue, so food donations are dropped off in front of the building. There also are no cooks on staff and it has been said they can’t cook because of insurance. According to the DHS budgets from 2020 - 2024, $0 is allocated for the kitchen which instead is used to host a culinary school. For this Thanksgiving donation in 2021, it would have been impossible for those turkeys to be cooked and most likely went home with staff members.

who are assaulted or die in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and NYC Department of Homeless Services shelters are not afforded investigation by VA Authorities.

Instead, shelter security runs interference for the perpetrators and sometimes violent s*x offenders who oftentimes are on parole and would be headed back to prison with NYPD.

This is the shelter that NYC Department of Veterans' Services calls the "Cadillac of Shelters."
