🚨MEDIA RELEASE: Suspect Arrested Following Assault and Barricade Incident in Liberty🚨
On August 25, 2026, at approximately 11:09 p.m., the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call regarding an assault that had just occurred in the area of Hovey Lane in Liberty. The caller identified himself as the victim of the assault.
While responding to the scene, deputies observed a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle driven by the suspected assailant. Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver failed to stop and was able to evade law enforcement. Upon arriving in the area, deputies located the victim, who reported that a neighbor had assaulted him without provocation while he was outside walking with his small child in a stroller.
Deputies were able to identify the suspect as Jonathan Tyler Johnson (DOB: 06/14/1987). At approximately 3:40 a.m. on August 26, 2026, deputies went to Johnson’s residence on Hovey Lane to make contact with him.
While deputies were on scene, Johnson brandished a weapon and barricaded himself inside the residence. Deputies established a perimeter around the residence, and the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team responded. After numerous attempts to communicate with Johnson and persuade him to surrender peacefully, the PCSO SWAT Team deployed less-lethal munitions into the residence. Johnson was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.
Johnson has been charged with Assault and Battery, 3rd Degree. He is currently being held at the Pickens County Detention Center while additional charges remain pending. He will appear before a magistrate for a bond hearing. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as appropriate.
