JYCA - Jewish Youth for Community Action

JYCA - Jewish Youth for Community Action JYCA: Jewish Youth for Community Action is a youth-led organization that empowers Jewish youth to take action for social justice through innovative leadership development, community organizing and education.
(1)

JYCA – Jewish Youth for Community Action is an innovative Jewish leadership training program dedicated to empowering youth and contributing to social justice. JYCA forms a tight-knit group in which every individual is respected and valued, everyone’s ideas are taken seriously, and enthusiastic participation is the norm.

Mission: JYCA is a Jewish program created and led by youth to work towards progressive social change. We seek to educate, empower, and inspire political, social, and cultural awareness in young Jewish activists. By building a community based on trust, respect, and cooperative processes, we create a safe environment for examining ourselves, and world issues, through Jewish perspectives. – written by JYCA participants June 1998

Jewish youth urge Oakland school district to eliminate school police – J.

Check out JYCA youth leaders in this article from the J Weekly about the ways they've been showing up in the fight for Police Free Schools in Oakland. We're kveling over the ways they're stepping into leadership in this moment and calling on Jewish leaders to stand up for racial justice. Thank you to Black Organizing Project for leading us towards #PoliceFreeSchools and #PencilsNotPolice. OUSD is voting at 4 PM today on whether or not to disband the Oakland School Police Department. Make your voice heard by calling in and making public comment. More info on how to join in the comments.

A large contingent of youth from Temple Beth Abraham, a Conservative synagogue in Oakland, is urging the city’s school board to pass a resolution that would eliminate the school district’s police department. Dubbed the George Floyd Resolution, the proposition would get rid of the Oakland Unified...

This week has brought up pain, anger and rage as we collectively grieve and honor the lives of George Floyd, Tony Mcdade, Breonna Taylor, David Mcatee, Nina Pop, and the many other Black and brown lives that have been taken by police, hate groups, and individuals in this country, with little to no accountability or justice.

We don’t yet have adequate words for all that this moment of uprising and uncertainty brings. As we condemn the terror of white supremacy and state violence that has characterized our nation from its founding to this very day, we root in pride for the people rising up, speaking out, and moving us towards a more whole future.
.
.
.
We’re moved by the Black youth-led uprisings happening around the country. We know that ending systemic white supremacy, racism, and police brutality isn’t a fight that started this week — nor will it end this week. As a multi-racial Jewish youth organization, we are not willing or able to sit on the sidelines. We know this is our fight, too.
.
.
.
We stand with Black Jews and all Black people in our organization, community, and the world calling for systemic change. We commit to showing up, in the streets and in our institutions, to supporting the #visionforblacklives, and to working internally to envision and fight for a world free of police violence where safety and justice are possible for all youth and all people. #BlackLivesMatter #justiceforgeorgefloyd #justiceforbreonnataylor

#GivingTuesdayNow is an opportunity to bring folks together while simultaneously supporting communities and nonprofits. JYCA, like so many organizations, has been greatly affected by the COVID-19 crisis and is asking for your help now. Through our Mutual Aid projects, we’ve committed to do what we can to help those most vulnerable and impacted by the pandemic. This is something no one can do alone though so in order to make it happen, JYCA needs all the support we can get! Donate today

Jews for Racial and Economic Justice [JFREJ]

Just in time for Passover, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice [JFREJ] has released a music video to lift up the demands of the #LetMyPeopleGo campaign (shout-out to New Sanctuary Coalition, Never Again Action, Brooklyn Community Bail Fund) calling on Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo to free the people being held inside New York’s jails and immigrant prisons. We love JFREJ and stand with them in their call to #FreeThemAll, from New York, to California, to all around the globe. Chag Sameach to all.

Last month, Brooklyn Community Bail Fund, Jews For Racial & Economic Justice, Never Again Action, New Sanctuary Coalition, and the New York Immigrant Freedom Fund joined forces to launch the Let My People Go campaign, to bail people out of jail and immigration detention, and demand that Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio #FreeThemAll.

Just in time for the first night of Passover, nine musicians and over thirty singers came together to set our demands to music. The ensemble features Black Jews and other Jews of Color, professional singers and passionate amateurs, and people from every background — all united in outrage over the government’s indifference to the lives of incarcerated New Yorkers.

Donate here to help #LetMyPeopleGo bail out incarcerated New Yorkers:

We had to cancel our youth retreat this weekend so instead our youth helped us cook up, package and label the food we were going to eat at our retreat into meals to support folks in our community who need help getting food (while practicing good hygiene and social distancing). If you are someone who could use a yummy meal, fill out the form below.

The JYCA - Jewish Youth for Community Action just donated 120 individually wrapped meals to us. (Great justice practice — keep paying your event caterer and pass the meals to people that need it!) We will distribute this weekend to disabled folks, elders and to our friends at The East Oakland Collective. We may need to do this for weeks/months. If you are disabled, especially BIPOC, and need meals, errands, sanitizer or carework in East Bay, please complete this form https://tinyurl.com/DJCCsupportform

If you are able to volunteer without exposing disabled people or elders in your life (Eg you have strong immune systems and don’t live with crips) please complete https://tinyurl.com/DJCCally

Financial resources via venmo @DJCultureClub are also very helpful. (PM for our fiscal sponsor info if you’d like). We will use funds to buy supplies, pay care workers, and fund ongoing infrastructure building for emergencies. We are organizing this as the disability justice arm of the #powertolive coalition (broader than DJCC) though any potential funds raised beyond immediate need will be managed by DJCC for mutual aid work.

At S.F. climate march, shofar blown to 'mark the end of fossil fuels' – J.

Check out this article from the J which heavily features JYCA youth showing up Jewishly at the Climate Strike on Friday! We see you Sam, Avery and Isha!

Thanks for the coverage Gabe Stutman!

"At around 1:45 p.m., a kippah-wearing Saxe-Taller walked out on stage holding a 3-foot-long shofar. He stood in front of the microphone and sounded the traditional t’ruah, tekiyah and shevarim blasts. He then explained to the crowd that the shofar traditionally is sounded to mark the end of the old year and the start of a new one.

“Today, I’m blowing this shofar to mark the end of fossil fuels and greed,” he said to roars of approval. “And the beginning of an era where we unite to stop climate change and environmental destruction!”"

In San Francisco on Friday, two high school leaders in the world of Jewish activism helped spearhead one of the city’s largest youth-led protests ever, joining millions of kids around the world who skipped school to march and urge action on climate change, the defining issue of their generation. I...

We love this feature on our friends at Camp Tawonga lifting up their important work to include and center the experiences of trans and nonbinary campers. Check it out!

For gender-nonconforming campers, a new all-gender cabin at Camp Tawonga was a rare respite from the outside world, where bullying and the feeling of not fitting in can make growing up difficult.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve been active with JYCA, but nonetheless my passion for civil rights is stronger than ever and now is the time to act. I have created a petition against the unjust tobacco regulations put in place by the Trump Administration. Although glorified as a means to eliminate the worst consequences of tobacco use, but is just another means of oppressing the young and decreasing corporate responsibility. The link to the petition is provided below. Petition:
