The elk rutting season in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park runs from early September through late October, with peak vocalization and activity happening from mid-September to mid-October
During this annual breeding period, male elk (bulls) experience higher testosterone levels, gather female harems, spar with rivals, and produce loud, echoing calls known as "bugling" that can be heard over a mile away.
Always use binoculars or a zoom camera lens rather than approaching the animals. Approaching too closely violates park regulations and risks severe fines, arrest, or dangerous animal attacks.
