Pike County Sheriff’s Office – Community Safety PSA
This evening, the Pike County Sheriff’s Office and the Pikeville Police Department conducted a joint Traffic Safety Checkpoint on Island Creek Road, with a focused effort on Occupant Safety.

Deputies and Officers provided safety belt and child‑passenger safety information while engaging directly with the community. The goal of this checkpoint was not to issue seat belt citations — instead, the emphasis was on education, positive reinforcement, and promoting safe habits for drivers and passengers.

Both agencies appreciate the community’s cooperation and remain committed to keeping Pike County families safe on our roadways.

This evening, Pike County Deputy Russell Blankenship attended the Phelps vs Pikeville Girls Junior High Basketball Game at Phelps, KY. While there, Deputy Blankenship handed out seatbelt and child passenger safety literature and was available to answer questions about the importance of occupant protection safety.
The Pike County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the opportunity to engage with students, parents, and fans to promote safe travel for every family in our community.

EVENING FOR CENTRAL BREATHITT, WEST CENTRAL FLOYD AND NORTHERN KNOTT
COUNTIES...

At 911 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy
rain across the warned area. Between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain have
fallen. Additional rainfall amounts up to 1 inch are possible in the
warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing
flash flooding.

SOURCE...Radar.

IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams,
urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
Estill, Martin, Wayland, Elmrock, Yellow Mountain, Vest, Handshoe,
Soft Shell, Bolyn, Mousie, Decoy, Larkslane, Buck, Betty, Bosco,
Garret, Porter Junction, Hueysville, Glo and Raven.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

The Delayed Acceleration Technique Saves Lives
When the light turns green, don’t punch the gas immediately. Take two extra seconds before accelerating — it’s called Delayed Acceleration, and it’s one of the simplest ways to prevent serious crashes at intersections.
Why it matters
• Many severe collisions happen when another driver runs the red light.
• That two second pause gives you time to scan left and right and make sure the intersection is clear.
• It reduces your chance of being hit by a speeding vehicle entering the intersection illegally.
How to use it
1. Light turns green
2. Count “one one thousand, two one thousand”
3. Check left, check right
4. Accelerate smoothly, when it is safe and legal to do so.
A small delay = a huge safety gain
This technique is especially important in busy areas, school zones, and high speed corridors where red light running is more common.
