🚨 COMMUNITY SAFETY ADVISORY – LOCK IT. LIGHT IT. REPORT IT.
The Pine Bluff Police Department is aware of recent reports involving individuals entering neighborhoods during the late-night and early-morning hours checking vehicle door handles and entering unlocked vehicles. Based on information gathered during these investigations, it appears that some of those involved may be young males, possibly juveniles.
While our officers are actively investigating these incidents and increasing patrols in affected areas, we need the community’s help. Many of these crimes are crimes of opportunity and can often be prevented by taking a few simple precautions.
Help Protect Yourself
✅ Lock your vehicle every time you park. Before walking away, check your doors a second time to ensure they are locked.
✅ Secure your key fob. Keep your keys in a location where buttons cannot be accidentally pressed and unlock your vehicle. Consider using a signal-blocking (Faraday) pouch if your vehicle uses keyless entry.
✅ Remove valuables. Never leave fi****ms, purses, wallets, cash, electronics, or other valuables inside your vehicle where they can be seen.
✅ Turn on exterior lighting. Motion-activated lights and well-lit driveways are proven deterrents to criminal activity.
✅ Install security cameras. Doorbell cameras such as Ring and other home surveillance systems help deter crime and provide valuable evidence when incidents occur.
✅ Keep your garage doors closed and avoid leaving spare keys inside or underneath your vehicle.
Parents and Guardians
We encourage parents and guardians to know where their children are, especially during late-night hours. Early intervention and supervision can prevent poor decisions from becoming criminal charges that affect a young person’s future.
A Message to Those Committing These Crimes
Entering another person’s property without permission, opening vehicle doors, or searching through someone else’s belongings is a criminal offense. These actions may result in charges such as criminal trespass, breaking or entering a vehicle, theft, burglary, or other offenses depending on the circumstances. More importantly, entering private property in the middle of the night places everyone at risk. Homeowners may mistake your intentions, creating dangerous situations that can escalate quickly.
This Is Not Just a Pine Bluff Issue
Communities throughout Arkansas—including Little Rock, North Little Rock, Bentonville, Fayetteville, Jonesboro, and other cities—have experienced similar “car hopping” incidents in recent years, where offenders move through neighborhoods checking for unlocked vehicles rather than forcing entry. Law enforcement agencies consistently report that the overwhelming majority of these thefts occur because vehicles were left unlocked. (Reddit)

If you observe suspicious individuals checking vehicle doors, walking through neighborhoods late at night, or trespassing on private property, do not confront them. Call 911 immediately if the activity is occurring or report suspicious activity to the Pine Bluff Police Department as soon as possible.
