In Arizona, on the afternoon of June 30, 2013, a fast-moving wildfire dubbed the Yarnell Hill Fire ignited. Fueled by high winds and dry conditions, the blaze quickly grew out of control, charring more than 8,000 acres in just a few days. On June 30th - just as the fire was reaching its peak - 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots were killed while fighting to save their community. This devastating event left behind grieving families and friends, as well as a community in shock. In remembrance of these brave firefighters, we want to share their story and highlight what made them so special.

Forest fires are a common occurrence in Arizona, with the state seeing an average of over 2,200 wildfires every year. While some of these are started naturally by lightning or wind, most are caused by humans. There are many different ways that humans can inadvertently start forest fires, and they can be very dangerous when they do. In Arizona, over 60% of all wildfires are caused by humans. The combination of high temperatures and intense flames can result in the loss of homes, businesses, and even lives. While many of these fires are small and easily contained, some grow into large, dangerous blazes.

On the afternoon of June 30, 2013, nineteen firefighters perished in a major fire blowup on the Yarnell Hill Fire (YH). This blaze occurred on a rugged steep mountain range in heavy brush fuels, near the town of Yarnell, Arizona. The firefighters that were entrapped and burned over were from the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew (GMIHC). The YH fire situation rapidly transitioned from a low complexity fire to a very high complexity fire due to the increased fire behavior and values at risk.
