The University of Pittsburgh Police Department is the third-largest law enforcement agency in Allegheny County, providing 24-hour protection for nearly 40,000 students, faculty, and staff. We cover the 132-acre Pittsburgh campus, along with University Facilities in outlying Pittsburgh neighborhoods, such as the Surplus Warehouse on Thomas Boulevard and the South Side Sports Complex. We have around

100 commissioned officer positions, which include a motorcycle unit of six officers, a bicycle unit of six officers, a K-9 unit of four officers (two are K-9s), and a Special Emergency Response Team (SERT). The SERT team is fully equipped to immediately respond to life-threatening events. Ten communications room personnel, 46 security guards, and four administrative professionals are also an integral part of our department. All commissioned officers are certified under state law and receive training in “rapid response, active shooter” on a regular basis.

We know change is hard, Panthers. The new bus-exclusive lanes, which are painted in red, on Forbes and Fifth Avenues may cause some confusion to commuters, but they’re actually pretty easy to navigate. Only public transit vehicles will be permitted to use the lanes; bicycles, parking, loading, and unloading are not permitted.

Some areas are marked with stripes to indicate that you can make a right turn. Signal that you’re moving into the striped area of the bus lane and complete your turn from the striped area. Always check for oncoming buses before crossing into the lane, and do not turn right from the middle lane.

Thank you to everyone who came out for Pitt Police’s National Night Out yesterday and to our fellow agencies and Pitt partners who tabled with us. We loved meeting and chatting with local community members, while connecting them with safety resources.

A special thank you to our friends from Pittsburgh’s Oakland Neighborhood for providing pizza from Pittsburgh Pizza, Starbucks Amos Hall for bringing coffee and snacks, and Schenley Scoops for refreshing ice cream!

We already can’t wait to celebrate National Night Out at Pitt next year!

Officers from our afternoon patrol shift were invited to a basketball clinic with Special Olympics athletes, and they had a great time shooting hoops together. A very special thanks to the Pitt Women’s Basketball team for hosting this incredible event at the Petersen Events Center! SOPA athletes, you continue to inspire us!

The Commercial Street Bridge Replacement project is underway. If you’re a pedestrian in Oakland, be aware that the timing of the lights along Forbes Avenue and Fifth Avenue has been extended. If you are waiting for the “walk” sign at intersections along both Forbes and Fifth, you will experience longer delays.

For your safety, you should still only cross at designated crosswalks when given the appropriate signal to do so and only after you’ve checked to make sure no traffic is coming through the intersection.

The Commercial Street Bridge project starts tomorrow, July 10. Be prepared for a major detour on I-376 Parkway East. Expect and prepare for potential impacts to the Oakland area, as both Forbes and Fifth Avenues are being utilized for the Interstate Detour. Download the 511PA mobile app and plan accordingly. No matter where you park your vehicle, always turn the engine off, hide your things, lock your vehicle, and take your keys. Be aware of your surroundings when you park, and call Pitt Police at 412-624-2121 to report theft on campus.
