Last Call: May 20, 2011
Semper Fidelis ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ท๏ธ

Remembering Fire Fighter/Inspector Thomas "Todd" Lange, who passed away on this date in 2011 from an On the Job related illness.

Thomas โ€˜Toddโ€™ Lange began his career in the Pittsfield Fire Department on July 29, 1974, after serving four years in the Marine Corps, including one year in Vietnam. He proudly served the city of Pittsfield for 32 years. He was an exceptional firefighter, proud to serve with his brothers.

When an On the Job Related Illness took him off the floor, and into the inspection bureau, he immersed himself in childrenโ€™s fire education programs, the care of the elderly and the hoarding problem in the city. He befriended many of the poor, bringing food and checking on them on his off hours.

Todd was a simple man who took nothing for granted. He judged no one and lived each day to the fullest. He was an avid golfer and a sports fanatic, sharing all of this with his father, brothers, and sons. He loved spending time with his family and traveling with his wife, Pam. He was a true friend, a family man, a husband most envied and a wonderful son, brother, father, and grandfather. The loves and lights of his life were his granddaughters, Maren and Emmy.

He will always be forever in our hearts.

Semper Fidelis.......

Today's Friday Flashback. One of Pittsfield's Biggest Conflagrations. January 27, 1912. The Academy of Music Fire. Miller Building, 160-196 North Street Academy of Music, 158-198 North Street
The Academy of Music was built in 1872 on 160-196 North Street where the Miller Building now stands. The Miller Building is named after former Pittsfield Mayor and Berkshire Eagle publisher Kelton B. Miller. Before the construction of the Academy of Music, this site was home to Phineas Allen, founder of the former Pittsfield Sun newspaper. The lower floors of the Academy of Music building had six stores, two of which were leased by Mr. Merrill of Northhampton who opened a high-class restaurant at the south end of the building. In 1890 there was an addition added to the back of the building. The Academy of Music is famous for housing the ceremony when Pittsfield became a city in 1891 and also was a chief location for theatrical performances until 1903. One memorable performance in 1903 featured two lions that broke out of the theater and had to be hunted down; one was killed and the other one was captured. On January 27, 1912 the Academy of Music building and a few buildings around it burned down. In 1912, the Miller Building was built on the site of the Academy of Music building. The Miller Building was home to multiple businesses, and now is home to The Berkshire Juvenile Court.

Members Of "C" Group, Under the Command of Deputy Chief Dan Garner, made quick work of a bedroom fire this morning on Union Street.

PITTSFIELD โ€” Firefighters put out a blaze in the bedroom of a downtown apartment Saturday morning, stopping it before it spread through a two-story, wooden building.

No one was injured in the fire at 126 Union St. Upstairs neighbors called the Pittsfield Fire Department after they heard a smoke detector sounding while tenants below were out on an errand.

"What saved the apartment and the house was the fact that they had closed the bedroom door," said Deputy Fire Chief Daniel Garner. "It would have been a different thing if they had not closed that door."

If the door to the bedroom had been left open, Garner said, the fire might have accelerated and spread. Instead, the fire was extinguished in an hour.

Garner said the Red Cross is assisting occupants of the first-floor apartment, a father and child, including the offer of temporary housing. The tenants returned Saturday morning to find the property swarming with trucks and fire crews.

When the department responded at 9:17 a.m., smoke was flowing out of a first-floor window. The fire was caused by improperly disposed smoking items, investigators determined.

Damage from flames and smoke, along with water from a hand-held line used to extinguish it, was estimated at $5,000.

According to city records, the two-story, wood-frame building is owned by Dominick R. Villane and Elizabeth Pelletier. They could not be reached at a listed phone number.

Garner said the owners live in Florida and face difficulty in returning to the city due to the new coronavirus.

The property, constructed in 1910, is valued by the city at $86,400.

Tenants upstairs, along with their cat and hedgehog, were not affected by the fire. Garner praised them for quickly calling in a report on 911.

"It was a great example of the system working," he said.

Thank you to the amazing Pittsfield Fire Dept. and Police Dept. I was involved in a serious accident at the intersection of Tyler and First on Thursday noon.
