🇺🇸 SPECIAL RECOGNITION AT THE NEXT PLAINS CITY COUNCIL MEETING 🇺🇸

The City of Plains invites the public to attend our upcoming City Council Meeting on the third Thursday of June as we take time to recognize three individuals whose actions exemplify courage, selflessness, and service to others.

During the meeting, the Mayor and City Council will honor three local heroes who played a vital role in assisting victims involved in a serious automobile accident. Their willingness to step forward in a time of crisis made a real difference and reflects the very best of our community.

This special recognition will include presentations and the introduction of a new award that will become a lasting part of the City of Plains.

We encourage all citizens to join us as we celebrate these remarkable individuals and show our appreciation for their heroic actions.

What a wonderful afternoon yesterday as we celebrated the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of the newly renovated restroom facilities at Maxine Reese Park!

On behalf of the City of Plains, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out to support this project and share in the celebration. We were thrilled to see such a great crowd gathered to mark this important improvement to one of our community’s most loved parks.

This project would not have been possible without the partnership and generosity of many people and organizations. We are especially grateful to the Carter Family Foundation and Sumter EMC for their financial support, along with the citizens of Plains through SPLOST funding. Together, these partnerships helped turn this vision into a reality.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the presentation of the Keys to the City to Carter Family Foundation and Sumter EMC in recognition of their commitment to our community and their partnership in this project. It was a small token of appreciation for the significant impact they have made in Plains.

We also want to thank Pickle Construction for their quality work, Ellen Harris for her coordination and assistance throughout the project, our City Council, city employees, and everyone who played a role in bringing this project to completion.

Most importantly, thank you to the citizens of Plains for your continued support and pride in our community. Seeing so many smiling faces yesterday was a reminder of what can be accomplished when people work together for the good of our town.

Please enjoy these photos from the event, and be sure to stop by Maxine Reese Park and see the newly renovated facilities for yourself!

Working together, we continue to make Plains an even better place to live, work, and visit. 🇺🇸🏡✂️🎀

🇺🇸 Our First Hometown Hero Banner is Up! 🇺🇸

Yesterday, Walton and I went out and installed the very first Plains Hometown Heroes Banner so we could test the mounting process and make sure everything was just right. After a little trial and error, we got it up—and I think it looks awesome!

It is especially fitting that our first banner honors Jimmy Carter, a hometown hero whose life of service has brought pride and recognition to Plains for generations.

Over the next few weeks, our city crew will be installing the remaining Hometown Heroes banners throughout the community. Each banner represents a veteran who answered the call to serve our nation, and we are honored to recognize their sacrifice and commitment.

As you see these banners going up, I hope you’ll take a moment to read the names and reflect on the men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform.

Thank you to all of our veterans and their families for your service and sacrifice.

Keep an eye out for more banners appearing around town soon! 🇺🇸

Today, as Mayor of Plains and as a veteran, Memorial Day carries a very personal meaning for me.

Across our nation, families gather, flags wave proudly, and many enjoy the freedoms that make America special. But today is also a sacred day of remembrance. It is a day set aside to honor the brave men and women who never made it home — those who gave their lives in service to our country so that we could live in freedom.

Having served for many years in uniform, I understand the bond shared by those who answer the call to serve. I also understand that Memorial Day is not simply about military service — it is about sacrifice. It is about remembering the empty seats at family tables, the Gold Star families who carry a burden every day, and the heroes whose courage secured the freedoms we often take for granted.

As a community, I ask that we pause today — even for just a moment — to remember them. Fly your flag proudly. Teach our children why this day matters. Say a prayer for the families of the fallen. And never forget the price that has been paid for our freedom.

On behalf of the City of Plains, thank you to all who have served, and today we especially honor those who gave everything.

May God bless our fallen heroes, their families, our veterans, our town, and the United States of America.
