how to keep my kids safe online

There are four main topics to cover with your children concerning internet safety.

🛡️ Online privacy: what information is okay to share and when it's okay to share it

🛡️ Inappropriate content: preparing your child for people and websites spreading inappropriate content like pornography and violence

🛡️ Sexting/sexual solicitation: the importance of not sharing sexual images and how to respond to people pressuring them to do so

🛡️ Cyberbullying: discussing healthy relationships and online communication etiquette

After 39 years of making a difference in the lives of children that have experienced abuse or neglect, Kathy Howard is retiring. She ended her career with the Department of Family and Protective Services as the Program Director of Investigations for Collin County. Kathy has spent close to 15 years housed at Children's Advocacy Center of Collin County and we will miss her presence and her expertise. Thank you for all you have done Kathy! @ Children's Advocacy Center of Collin County

It's not uncommon for parents to feel emotional distress after a child discloses their abuse. With these intense emotions, it may be difficult to find a healthy outlet for them, but keep in mind: your child is looking at your example. They are watching the way that you’re handling everything and they will emulate what you’re doing. This may feel a bit overwhelming, but you have the opportunity to show your child how to experience those feelings without letting the emotion control your response.

One way to make dealing with your emotions a topic of conversation is to introduce your child to this emotion wheel. It’s a great opportunity for you to check-in with yourself to put words to what you are feeling and talk about how you’ll deal with those feelings in a healthy way.

Today is National Nonprofit Day- a day to highlight who we are and what we do. This year, we wanted to celebrate a little differently by pausing to thank everyone who helps make our life-changing work possible. Without the support of the citizens of Collin County, we would not be able to serve 100% of kids who need our help. Thank you!

If a child you know did not disclose their abuse right away, it may be difficult for you to understand why. It is not uncommon for children to delay disclosing or to tell only part of what happened. Here are some reasons why children might not talk about their abuse right away. Learn more: https://www.caccollincounty.org/disclosure/

Since 2015, the CAC Cultural Diversity Committee (The Culture Club) has been meeting to discuss initiatives focused on enhancing cultural awareness among staff, increasing diversity, and bolstering support for under-served populations in our community. We held the 2020/2021 fiscal year Kick-Off Meeting this past week via Zoom. We look forward to continuing our efforts to ensure the equal representation of each family that we serve.

The event will certainly look different this year, but we are excited about being able to provide these basic necessities for our community while staying safe. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this event a reality!

We are still raising funds to cover the cost of the packs at https://www.caccollincounty.org/backtoschool if you would like to contribute.

Interns are often the unsung heroes for many organizations. For those who haven't been following along this week, we have been highlighting the experience of some of the students who have been interning with us during the COVID-19 outbreak. There were students all across the country scrambling for ways to meet their graduation requirements, and we were privileged enough to offer a safe and meaningful experience for the group pictured here.

Click through the images to read what some of them had to say about their experience, or visit https://bit.ly/3gdug6n to learn more. #NationalInternDay

A lot of people can relate to the difficulties of unexpectedly working from home. Hear how Alisa Ray handled interning during a pandemic and how she was able to find some balance.

Consent doesn't just apply when a situation is romantic or sexual in nature. This means that there are plenty of everyday opportunities to teach or talk about consent, even when your children are young. ⠀

Who started the consent conversation when your children were young? 🙋‍♀️ How did it go? Share your stories in the comments. ⬇️ Maybe it can help inspire another parent!

State Farm Check Presentation

Thank you State Farm Agents for $3000!

Check presentations certainly look different during a time of social distancing, but that didn't stop Glenn Linsky, Ashley Orf, Yesenia Martinez, Mathew Huskstep, and Stephanie South from the Dallas Richardson State Farm Sales Territory from donating $3000 dollars to the Center through the State Farm Good Neighbor Community Funding grant program. They are our neighbors, and they are here for the children of Collin County.

Safety. Healing. Justice.

The mission of Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County is to provide safety, healing, and justice to children victimized by abuse or neglect in our community. Achieving this requires multi-disciplinary team approach; under one roof, we house law enforcement, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), therapists, and family advocates. Additionally, we work with the District Attorney’s office to ensure that justice is served.

KEY FACTS:

•Each year, more than 5,000 reports of child abuse or neglect are made here in Collin County.

•For more than 25 years, we have provided critical services to children and non-offending family members victimized by neglect in our community, free of charge.

•We are the only agency in Collin County offering all these services under one roof and we do so because our community’s children deserve the best childhood possible.

•The Crimes Against Children division of the District Attorney’s Office maintains a 98 percent conviction rate thanks to collaboration across agencies.

•Rated four stars by Charity Navagators for seven consecutive years.

•All services are offered to clients at no cost as long as they need help.

•CACCC relies on funding and support from the community to carry out its mission.
