Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer was a shining light in this dark world, a true servant of the public, and a cherished ally of the Jewish community and all who were lucky enough to know her.

As we light the Hanukkah candles this evening, we’re painfully aware of the darkness around us. The deadly antisemitic attack at Bondi Beach in Australia and the tragic shooting at Brown University are heartbreaking reminders that hate can turn lethal.

Hanukkah calls us to rededicate ourselves to courage and solidarity. As the Broward County Democratic Party Jewish Caucus, we stand firmly against antisemitism and all forms of hate—and for the safety and dignity of every community. Jewish people here and around the world are living with real fear and vulnerability, and we urgently call on everyone in our community—and beyond—to stand with us, speak out, and unequivocally denounce antisemitism wherever it appears.

Chag Hanukkah Sameach. May our shared light be stronger than the darkness we face.
