We are sad to announce that retired ACSO explosive detection canine, K9 Gypsy, passed away after suffering from severe health complications. K9 Gypsy and her partner, Deputy E. Marapao, began their partnership in 2003. K9 Gypsy was one of the first two canines in the departments history. K9 Gypsy was certified through the ACSO EOD certification and obtained a certification through the ATF in 2005.
She won numerous first place awards in both Northern and Southern California explosive detection canine competitions. She served as a support canine for numerous presidential details for the Secret Service (Presidents George H. Bush, George W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama). K9 Gypsy was assigned to the US State Department for the King of Jordan, Prime Ministers of Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. Just to name a few....
She was assigned to the World Series in San Francisco, conducted bomb sweeps for the Oakland Raiders home games, as well as NASCAR and the NHRA at the Sonoma County Raceway. She assisted in numerous details with the U.S. Coast Guard at the Port of Oakland.
K9 Gypsy located several explosive devices, fired weapons and even a buried hand gr***de in Hayward. She was initially assigned to the Oakland Airport from 2003 to 2006, then completed her canine career at the Eden Township Substation in 2012. K9 Gypsy retired when Deputy Marapao was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
K9 Gypsy's success proved the use of canines are a valuable asset to all law enforcement agencies.
Our thoughts go out to Sgt. Marapao and his family.
