Thank you!!

Our Minnesota Guardsmen answered the call last week to support the Twin Cities, with many of our soldiers and airmen leaving their families late at night without knowing how long they would be gone. Now, they are slowly transitioning back to their families and their civilian jobs and to the Minnesota communities they call home.

Airman 1st Class Elizabeth Preda was in Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps in high school and got the permission of her parents to enlist in the Minnesota Air National Guard when she was 17 years old. It has been three years since then, and being part of the state’s full activation has been her biggest mission yet.

“It was scary at first. I was less nervous when I got to base and I was with people who knew more of what to expect.”

A member of the 148th Fighter Wing Security Forces Squadron, Preda has had the opportunity to conduct missions that seem to validate her choice to serve with the Minnesota National Guard.

“In high school my JROTC had a banquet and Brigadier General [Sandy] Best was there. I have a photo somewhere that I took with her. Since I’ve been here on duty I’ve had the opportunity to be on security detail for her!”

As a paramedic for North Memorial Health, Spc. Emerson Swenson would have been a valuable asset either on or off of the state active duty mission. A member of the 257th Military Police Company, Swenson has changed his military occupational specialty from military police to a combat medic. Given his valuable role in the community, Swenson was given the option to activate with his military brothers and sisters. He chose to serve with the Guard because there are far fewer medics in military units than paramedics and saw more value in activating with the state.

Swenson sees the Minnesota National Guard as an organization that can help bridge the divide between the citizens and the law enforcement at whom their anger is directed. “It feels good supporting the people of Minnesota. We are on your side. I’m proud of doing this and glad that I get to help.”

No stranger to active duty, the recent full activation of the Minnesota National Guard is the most unique that Tech. Sgt. Michael Fish has been a part of during his military career. A member of the 148th Fighter Wing Security Forces Squadron, he and members of his team have been part of a series of various missions. From supporting local law enforcement to conducting security to acting as a quick reaction force, Minnesota Air National Guard Security Forces have been on call around the clock.

Fish conducts his military duties with a distinctive weight of legacy and pride. Like his father before him, and his father before that, they have all served and made careers in the 148th Fighter Wing. With one son and one daughter, he has two chances to continue his family’s legacy.

“I know everyone I’ve talked to is just proud to be here. That’s the oath we all took. That’s what the National Guard is all about.”

Minnesota National Guard Soldiers and Airmen stood guard overnight alongside local law enforcement, protecting Minnesota’s Capitol area May 30, 2020. By daybreak, more than 5,025 Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen were activated to support a variety of missions across the Twin Cities.

"We are in a position of significantly greater strength tonight in Minneapolis and St. Paul than we were last night, “ said Minnesota's Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Jon Jensen. “That strength, and full-integration with civil authorities, changed the tone Saturday night around the Twin Cities.”

Throughout the night and into the early morning, Soldiers and Airmen completed 19 missions to include supporting operations with the Minnesota State Patrol, Minneapolis Police and Fire Departments; providing security for hospitals and escorting emergency medical services.

It was a quiet night for our service members. Thank you to everyone who peacefully protested and stayed safe at home. Our Airmen and Soldiers ran more than two dozen missions across the Twin Cities last night.

"Together as Minnesotans, we're going to get through this difficult time," said Minnesota's Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Jon Jensen. "I would like to thank the community for supporting our efforts to restore order and preserve the right to safely and peacefully protest.”

“We are committed to supporting this mission until no longer called to do so,” said Jensen. “Our capabilities will not diminish as we identify opportunities to return our Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen to their home communities.”
