Plymouth Police see increase in motor vehicle theft

Since the beginning of this month, Plymouth police have responded to 19 vehicle thefts, some of which have been stolen out of residential garages, and 31 thefts from vehicles. Many of these crimes involved vehicles that are left unlocked.

Some criminals have also used garage door openers from vehicles to get into homes and burglarize.

Most of these crimes are preventable by taking simple safety steps as part of your regular routine. Please lock your vehicle doors, remove valuables and keep garage door openers out of sight.

In the past two days, the Plymouth Police Department has noted a sharp increase in stolen vehicles and vehicle break-ins 🚗

Most cases involved unlocked vehicles, and some included cars with the keys left inside. In some instances, criminals used garage door openers from unlocked cars to gain access to garages and residences.

Plymouth police remind residents to always keep vehicle doors locked, including while at home. It’s also important to remove all valuables from vehicles and to keep garage door openers out of sight.

“Criminals look for the easiest targets,” Plymouth Police Officer Sara Klaes said. “Leaving your vehicle unlocked makes it easy for thieves to steal, creating a low-effort crime of opportunity."
