ISU Preparatory Piano Program

ISU Preparatory Piano Program Piano instruction for students of all ages.

The ISU Preparatory Piano program was founded in 2000 to serve a dual purpose: to offer quality piano instruction to students at all levels, school-age and above; and provide ISU keyboard majors the necessary and guided teaching internships that will ensure their professional success. The teachers include experienced keyboard majors at ISU, faculty and staff at ISU, and ISU alumni. This program is nationally accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Director and founder, Dr. Kori Bond, meets privately with each prospective student and at least one parent or guardian (in the case of pre-college students), in order to ensure making a thoughtful and strategic match between student and teacher. To arrange an interview, contact Dr. Bond at 208-282-2551, or [email protected]. Each teacher in the program balances a traditional Classical approach using standard piano methods with other material, which is slightly different with each teacher. For example, some teachers are particularly interested in jazz, church music, popular music, composition, or other interests. Students receive a private lesson once a week for 13 weeks each semester, with rates starting at $169 per semester. All pre-college students are required to perform by memory in recitals at the end of each semester. Students may also register in the summer, at a more flexible schedule. Each semester, select students are invited to perform in a master class with either Dr. Bond or a visiting teacher. Adult students are provided with an alternative performing venue--a “Playing Party,” which occurs at the end of the spring semester each year. Included in the semester fee are: Recital performances every semester in Goranson Hall on a Steinway Concert Grand Master classes with visiting piano teachers, Dr. Kori Bond, or Mark Neiwirth Free tickets to piano recitals given by ISU Faculty and guest artists Preparation for competitions and festivals

Dear Parents and Students of the ISU Preparatory Music Programs,

Some of you may have already heard that because of Covid 19/Coronavirus, ISU is sending students on spring break for two weeks as of Monday, March 16.
While students will be allowed back on campus, they are encouraged to stay in their family homes for the rest of the semester, if possible.
All courses will be completed online and in the music department, we will be teaching individual lessons over Skype.

What does this mean for us?
The preparatory programs will also be on spring break for the next two weeks.
The end-of-semester performances are now canceled.

Moving forward, because our students are not required to be back on campus and due to the music department's policy that we do not teach face to face private lessons the preparatory program will offer several options for the rest of the semester.

1. Zoom/FaceTime/Skype/Google Duo lessons: Though we realize this is not ideal, it is our preference as it keeps the students moving forward and the instructors working (and thus getting paid).

2. Cease lessons and use the remaining tuition for credit for the fall 2020 semester.

3. Cease lessons and donate the remaining tuition to the program, allowing the instructors to receive at least partial pay.

If none of these options are suitable for you, please contact me and we will figure out a solution.

While we as a university, department, and preparatory program are disappointed that we cannot finish our semester in the usual way, the health and safety of our campus community is our priority.

Please let me know by March 27th how you decide to proceed.
If I do not hear from you by then, your tuition will be donated to pay instructors.

I will be in frequent contact with the instructors and will be sure that they are also in touch with you.

Teacher highlight.

Emma Dombroski is not a typical piano teacher. She couldn’t decide whether she wanted to major in voice or piano, so she is doing everything she can to do both. While attending ISU, she collaborates with other singers and instrumentalists and teaches in the PPP. Currently she is a sophomore and is working towards a bachelors degree in Music Education. She has competed in several piano festivals both for solo and duet piano. In high school, she accompanied her choir for many songs and taught private piano lessons. She is very passionate about music and loves teaching others.

M.M. 1994, Northern Illinois University
D.M. 1999, Indiana University

Joined ISU Faculty in 1999

Dr. Kori Bond is Professor of Piano at Idaho State University, where she coordinates the piano program, teaches piano and related courses, and directs the Preparatory Piano Program. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Indiana University in Piano Performance, a Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Northern Illinois University, and Bachelors degrees in Music, Biology, and Religion from Walla Walla University. She began her piano studies at age 6 with Florence Brinton in Salt Lake City and her other primary piano teachers were Edward Auer, Donald Walker, and Leonard Richter. She also studied chamber music extensively with Gyorgy Sebok, Leonard Hokanson, members of the Vermeer Quartet, and faculty at the Sarasota Music Festival, where she studied for two summers.

Bond has performed in numerous states as a solo and collaborative artist and as a soloist with orchestra. She frequently appears in concert with pianist Karlyn Bond and with other colleagues at ISU. She has also performed with numerous internationally esteemed artists such as sopranos Caroline Worra and Diane Ragains, violinist Corey Cerovsek, flutist Christina Jennings, and violist Roland Glassl, along with many others. Recent performances include recitals at the Summer Festival at Indiana University, the University of Montana, Boise State University, Westminster College of Salt Lake City, the College of Idaho, Brigham Young University, Walla Walla University, Brigham Young University-Idaho, and recitals on the Temple Square Concert Series in Salt Lake City. Recent concerto performances include Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 3 and Nights in the Garden of Spain, by Manuel de Falla with the Idaho State Civic Symphony, and Mozart’s Concerto No. 27 with the Idaho Falls Symphony Orchestra. Every summer, she directs the ISU Summer Piano Institute, and has also been a guest artist at the Sierra Music Festival in Mammoth Lakes, California, and a guest faculty member at the Edward Auer Piano Festival at Indiana University. This school year she will be featured performing solo recitals in several venues, including the “Stars of Steinway Series” in Boise, and the University of Wyoming.

In 2007, Bond released her first CD of the Complete 24 Preludes and Fugues of Dmitri Shostakovich, published by Centaur Records. Her playing on this recording has been acclaimed as featuring the “technique to play Shostakovich’s sometimes knotty piano writing without dropping a note, but she also plays with immense musicality” (Allmusic). Her second CD, featuring songs by Howard Boatwright performed with soprano Diana Livingston Friedley, has just been released, also by Centaur Records.

While a student, Kori Bond was a prizewinner in numerous regional and national competitions. She is now a frequent adjudicator and clinician throughout the West. Her students have been prizewinners at the state and division levels of the MTNA competition and winners of numerous other local and state competitions, including the Federation of Music Clubs Collegiate Competition and the Musicians West competition.

The ISU School of Performing Arts is pleased to announce that nationally renowned pianist Andrew Todd will be featured in recital and masterclass on Thursday, February 23. The recital is at 7:30 p.m. in Goranson Hall, and Mr. Todd will be performing works by John Adams, Robert Schumann, Philip Glass, and Sergei Prokofiev. Admission is granted for a suggested donation of $10 for community members, but is free for ISU students and families with kids enrolled in the Preparatory Piano Program. The masterclass is free and open to the public, and will be at 3:00-4:00, also in Goranson Hall. Performing in the class will be piano majors studying at ISU. According to Professor of Piano Kori Bond, Todd is a pianist of the utmost command of the instrument, and also plays with stylistically-aware expression. This is certainly an event that should attract fans of piano music at all levels. (Children age six and above are admitted.) Mr. Todd is a prominent soloist and chamber musician, performing regularly at such distinguished venues as the Grand Teton Music Festival, for which he is the Executive Director. He has studied at Northwestern University, the Mannes College of Music, and the University of Colorado. Todd made his orchestral debut at age 17, performing the Schumann Piano Concerto with the Columbus Symphony. As a winner of the Artists International Piano Competition, he made his New York Debut at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. He has released two CD recordings.
