PRESS RELEASE
UPDATE: GRAND GULF ROAD DEATH INVESTIGATION

The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the identity of the individual found deceased along Grand Gulf Road on August 24, 2026.

The deceased has been identified as Todd Lavon Walker, 60, of Magee, Mississippi.

At approximately 5:54 a.m., deputies responded to Grand Gulf Road after receiving a report of an individual lying in a ditch who appeared to be deceased. Upon arrival, law enforcement located Mr. Walker deceased.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) was contacted to assist with the investigation. At this time, no foul play is suspected.

At the request of Mr. Walker’s family, we are releasing the accompanying photograph of him as they wish for the community to remember him as he was in life. Mr. Walker is pictured in the back of the photograph with his three grandchildren.

The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office extends our sincere condolences to the Walker family, his friends, and all those who knew and loved him during this difficult time.

A huge THANK YOU to Sheriff Travis Patten and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office for their swift response and assistance in locating and apprehending an individual wanted by our department.

This is a great example of interagency cooperation and teamwork. When we called, Sheriff Patten and his team answered without hesitation and got the job done.

🚨 FUGITIVE CAPTURED — INTERAGENCY TEAMWORK IN ACTION 🚨

At approximately 1:08 p.m. today, Claiborne County Sheriff Edward Goods contacted me directly requesting assistance from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office in locating and apprehending Jabarrine Whitney, who was wanted by Claiborne County.

Upon receiving Sheriff Goods’ request, I immediately assigned the mission to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Group.

By approximately 3:28 p.m., just 2 hours and 20 minutes after the initial request, members of our Special Operations Group had located Whitney and taken him into custody. Members of the ACSO Patrol Division then assisted by transporting Whitney to the jail.

Whitney was wanted by the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office on a charge of Grand Larceny.

I commend the members of our Special Operations Group for their quick response, coordination, and determination in successfully completing this mission, as well as our Patrol Division for assisting with the transport.

This is what law enforcement partnership looks like. When one of our neighboring sheriffs or law enforcement partners calls for assistance, we are always ready and willing to answer that call. Criminals do not recognize jurisdictional lines, and neither should our commitment to working together to keep our communities safe.

We appreciate Sheriff Edward Goods and the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office for their continued partnership and confidence in ACSO.

Great job, ACSO! Mission received. Mission accomplished.

A special thank you to Sergeant Jackson and American Legion Post 216, representing our veterans, for coming to the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office to assist with lowering our flag to half-staff in honor of Former Sheriff Frank Davis.

We felt it was only fitting to recognize Sheriff Davis for his many years of dedicated service to Claiborne County. This gesture represents respect, gratitude, and appreciation for his service and legacy.

Thank you to American Legion Post 216 for helping us pay this special tribute. May Sheriff Davis’ service and contributions never be forgotten.

CLAIBORNE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATING DEATH ON GRAND GULF ROAD

On August 24, 2026, at approximately 5:54 a.m., the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office responded to Grand Gulf Road after receiving a report of an individual lying in a ditch who appeared to be deceased.

Upon arrival, Sheriff’s Office personnel located a deceased white male. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) was contacted and requested to assist with the investigation.

At this time, no foul play is suspected. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available and appropriate.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld at this time pending proper notification of family.

It is with profound sadness that I join the citizens of Claiborne County and the law enforcement community in mourning the passing of former Sheriff Frank Davis, a man whose life and career represent an important chapter in the history of Claiborne County and the State of Mississippi.

Sheriff Davis dedicated decades of his life to public service. After graduating from high school, he served two years in the United States Army and later earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Alcorn State University in 1971. He continued his studies in Criminal Justice at the University of Southern Mississippi and later pursued additional studies in Business Education at Alcorn State University. (GovInfo⁠)

His career included service as a First Sergeant with the 114th Military Police Company, Deputy Sheriff under former Sheriff Dan McCaa, Assistant Chief of Police for the City of Port Gibson, Director of Claiborne County Civil Defense, and service in leadership capacities within the Claiborne County Public School District. Sheriff Davis made history when he was elected Sheriff of Claiborne County in 1979, becoming Mississippi’s first elected Black sheriff in the modern era following Reconstruction. (GovInfo⁠) His leadership extended far beyond Claiborne County. He served as President of the Mississippi Sheriffs’ Association from 2000–2001, becoming the first African American to hold that position. He was also a founding father of the Mississippi chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) and served as its president in 1990. (GovInfo⁠)

These were not simply titles or accolades. They represented barriers broken, doors opened, and a lifetime committed to public service. Sheriff Davis demonstrated that a sheriff from Claiborne County could make an impact not only locally, but throughout the State of Mississippi and the law enforcement profession.

As the current Sheriff of Claiborne County, I recognize and respect the foundation laid by those who occupied this office before me. Regardless of the generation in which we serve, we share the responsibility of protecting our citizens and leaving the department and community better for those who come behind us.

On behalf of myself, my family, and the entire Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department, I extend my deepest condolences to the Davis family. We honor his many years of service, his historic accomplishments, and the contributions he made to Claiborne County and the State of Mississippi.

Rest in peace, Sheriff Frank Davis. Your service made history, your accomplishments opened doors, and your legacy will forever be a part of Claiborne County.

CLAIBORNE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Two Charged in Highway 18 Shooting; Bonds Set at $500,000 Each

PORT GIBSON, MISSISSIPPI — August 18, 2026 — The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office has charged Roshunda Gordon and Davina Hyder in connection with an aggravated assault that occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026, near 1004 Frontage Road/Highway 18 in Port Gibson.

According to the investigation, the victims were traveling on Highway 18 when a verbal confrontation occurred. During the incident, gunfire was allegedly directed toward the victims’ vehicle. Two rounds struck the vehicle in the area of the rear driver’s-side window and door.

Gordon and Hyder were subsequently taken into custody and charged in connection with the shooting.

At 10:00 a.m. today, both defendants appeared for their initial appearance before Honorable Judge David Flowers. Bond was set at $500,000 each.

The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this incident. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office.
